I Can’t Believe This! My Best Mate Is Actually Alex’s Uncle! I Nursed His Son for Over Four Years and Never Realised He Wasn’t MineWhen I finally confronted Alex, he burst into tears, confessing that his “uncle” was actually his long‑lost father, and that the child I’d raised was his half‑brother all along.

I cant believe this! My best mate turns out to be the father of my son! Ive been looking after the child for over four years and never imagined he wasnt mine.

Eleanor and Victor had loved each other since they were teenagers at St.Marys Comprehensive. When she finished school, Victor won a place at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell, while Eleanor missed out on a university place. They called each other every day.

Soon after Victor began his flying sorties, Eleanor grew jealous of the attractive stewardesses who wrote to him after each flight. She flew to his base to make up, and they spent an unforgettable night talking about their future. The next morning, though, she saw a message from a flight attendant asking when his next flight would be, saying it was so much calmer to be in the air with him.

Jealousy flared, Eleanor stormed off in tears, and Victors career took off. He was offered a lucrative posting overseas and wondered how to tell his girlfriend that he would have to leave in a year. Three weeks later Eleanor announced she was pregnant.

Victor proposed; they married in a splendid ceremony that almost the whole town attended. He turned down the overseas posting because his new wife was against it.

After the wedding Victor drove his bride to London. When their son, Oliver, was born, they bought a spacious terraced house on a mortgage with the help of Eleanors mother, Margaret. Victor worked long hours to keep up the repayments and support the family.

If Id gone abroad for a year, I wouldnt have been stuck at the office all the time! Id already be climbing the career ladder! Victor sighed.

Of course, love. Im here with the baby while youre off gallivanting with new ladies on your flights, Eleanor replied, nervous.

How could you accuse me of jealousy? If Im with you, Im with you and no one else! Victor snapped.

The arguments continued day after day, especially after his flights. Eleanor would search his phone, trying to find something incriminating. After three years Victor took a parttime job as an instructor at the RAF College and, on weekends, drove a cab to make ends meet.

To keep the peace at home, he abandoned his dream of becoming a senior pilot, doing everything he could to be a good father and husband.

One month Victor missed a mortgage payment. When he went to the bank to rearrange the loan, he needed the original contract. His wife wasnt home, so he rummaged through the filing cabinet himself. He found the contract, but beneath it lay a paternity test report.

What on earth is this? he muttered.

The results read: Child: Oliver Victor. Probable father: Andrew Clarke. Probability of paternity: 99%.

I cant believe it! My best mate is Olivers father! Ive been looking after him for four years and never imagined he wasnt mine.

Victor didnt know how to react. He stared at the report, stunned.

Darling, were home! Eleanor shouted as she came in, kissing him. He barely responded.

Oliver, lets have dinner, then well go to the park, Victor said to his son.

Right, love! What have I done to make you so happy while Ive been away? Eleanor laughed, trying to lighten the mood.

Time for dinner. Then a walk with our boy.

Eleanor watched Victors face, bewildered by his detached tone.

Victor! Whats happening at work? Another posting? Why wont you talk to me?

Ive got no desire to talk, he snapped, getting up and heading to another room.

Eleanor followed, bombarding him with questions.

Are you amused? Do you expect me to guess whats wrong? You treat me like an afterthought! Im your wife! Be kind and tell me whats happening!

Yes, wife! How could you stay silent so long? I gave up my own dream for you! Ive stopped visiting my mother, stopped meeting friends!

Eleanor stared at him with huge, pleading eyes, trying to understand his outburst.

Does he even know? Am I completely wrong? How could he have found out? she wondered.

Two months passed since Victors discovery. He felt lost, no longer wanting to speak with Eleanor. How could his best friend hide something like this?

The truth was that Andrew, the man who had always shown a special fondness for Eleanor, never hid his feelings. Months before Victor and Eleanors wedding, Andrew married his own partner, realizing Eleanor would never be his. At every family gathering, Andrew would ask the dance with Victors wife instead of his own spouse.

Victors mother, Margaret, once said, Eleanor, you and Andrew would make a lovely pair.

Eleanor laughed, replying, Youre joking! Im married to your son! We have a child and we love each other!

Margaret replied, I see the love, but you always turn to his friend for help. You never ask Victor. Why?

Eleanor answered, Hes always at work. He has no time for me, so I ask Andrew. Hes a good man and never says no.

Margaret, feeling uneasy, noticed a birthmark on Olivers neck that matched Andrews. Over the years the boy began to resemble Andrew even more. It was Margaret who had organised the DNA test and, after the guests left, collected the results in a small tin.

Late one evening, when Victor was away, Margaret visited their home, sobbing.

I told you! How could you deceive my grandson? Andrew doesnt even know he has a son! You must tell Victor at once, or I will.

Eleanor pleaded with her motherinlaw through tears, Please, dont tear our lives apart! It was a single night with Andrew, and nine months later Oliver was born. Victor loves me and our son. I thought we were solid as a rock! Andrew had no career, no money. I did it for the child! Please, let our grandson have a normal life!

Margaret left the house, heartbroken for the boy, but not wanting to ruin his future.

Eleanor, fearing the truth, hid the test results in a drawer, hoping Victor would never find them.

One evening, after a shift, Eleanor decided to tell Victor everything. She went to the living room, only to find his belongings missing; on his bed lay a new remotecontrolled model aircraft.

Mom, wheres Daddy? the little boy asked.

Hes away on a job, love, Eleanor said, climbing onto the balcony and breaking into tears.

The thought of losing Victor terrified her. She called him.

Victor, please, we need to talk! she pleaded, voice shaking.

I think its best if we dont, he replied coldly. I love my son, Ill support him, but I cant live under the same roof. I gave up everything for you, and you broke my trust. Call me only about Oliver. I loved you, but you smashed everything. If it werent for the boy, Id have walked out long ago and never answered your calls.

Victor, please dont hang up! Listen to me! Eleanor begged, but the line went dead.

Oliver missed his father, and Victor later came to collect him for a weekend. Eleanor ran to him, demanding a conversation.

Do you remember the fight over that stewardess who kept texting you? I went home, met friends, we went to a club, and Andrew was there. We were having fun. I dont even recall how I ended up in his flat. I was ashamed the next morning. I wanted to tell you but feared losing you. Andrews wedding was a week away; he said, Imagine nothing happened. He kept texting, calling. When I saw the two lines on the test, I thought it was yours. It turned out not to be. Your mother gave me the results when Oliver was six months old. Ive tried to forget the whole thing. Its Andrews fault! Hes always been jealous of you! Forgive me, please! I love you!

No forgiveness for you! I wont hear another word! Victor shouted.

Victor resumed his flights, and a few months later filed for divorce. He sent Oliver presents from abroad and money whenever he could. He never told Andrew the truth about Olivers parentage. Andrew and his wife moved overseas, leaving both Eleanor and Victor alone.

The whole saga shows how a single thoughtless act can shatter trust and love. Victor lost his best friend and his wife.

Eleanor, however, remained financially comfortable: a large house, a nice car, a good salary, and a monthly allowance from Victor. Oliver attended a toprated school. She went to beauty salons, lived a seemingly perfect life, but without love.

She tried repeatedly to win Victor back, to no avail. Victor, even with new acquaintances, struggled to start fresh relationships, fearing he would repeat the same mistakes. Eventually he reached the heights he had always dreamed of.

Life throws countless twists at us. Was Eleanor right to keep the secret for so long? What would you have done in Victors place? The story reminds us that honesty, even when painful, protects the foundations of trust; without it, even the strongest bonds can crumble.
