Emily never expected such a surprise from her husband—after ten blissful years of marriage, their two lovely daughters, aged five and nine, were soundly asleep in their room.

Michael dragged himself home from the office party just before dawn. His wife, Emily, pretended to be fast asleep. He slipped into bed beside her and fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.

When Emily rose early and pulled the covers back, she found a dab of bright red lipstick smeared on Michaels shirt. At the same instant her phone buzzed with a text: Good morning, love!.

The message stopped her dead in her tracks. She had never expected such a surprise from her husband.

Ten happy years of marriage lay behind them, and their two charming daughtersLily, five, and Sophie, ninewere still snuggled in their bedroom, deep in sleep.

Emily felt the urge to launch into an argument, but she managed to hold her tongue. She slipped into the bathroom, let the tears fall, and tried to pull herself together.

This is the easiest thing to do, she thought, start a fight. Yet any quarrel now could push him away, and Im not sure I could raise two children on my own.

She took a quick shower, dried her hair with the blowdryer, brushed it into a tidy style, and then set about making breakfast. Michael didnt stir until around lunchtime.

Blimey, this is hard, he complained, stretching.

Want me to make you a coffee? Emily offered, forcing a smile that took more effort than shed like to admit.

After the coffee was ready, she turned to him.

Michael, I hope you wont be stuck at work tomorrow. Ive got the night shift, and I need to collect Lily from the nursery.

Of course, of course, he replied.

Emily worked as a hairdresser in a bustling salon in Manchester. After her second shift the following day, she returned home carrying a small box of chocolates.

What, feeling like sweets? Michael asked, eyeing the parcel.

One of my regulars gave them to me. Hes always in for a trim, and he thought Id like a little treat, she replied.

Michael turned the box over in his hands.

Those arent cheapabout £12 for a box! Why did you accept them?

They didnt ask me out, Michael. Its just a friendly gesture, Emily answered, and the conversation drifted away.

A couple of days later Emily arrived home with a lavish bouquet of roses.

Is that the same client again? Michael called from the doorway.

Michael, Emily began, you stayed late last night, and I never asked where youd been or who you were with. And this is just a bunch of flowers.

When she left the salon after another night shift, she spotted Michael waiting at the exit.

Did you leave the girls alone? she asked, halfconcerned.

Nonsense, I tucked them into bed. I thought Id meet you in the car, he replied.

Its only a fiveminute walk, Emily retorted.

Later, once they were back home, Michael turned to her.

Emily, can I always meet you after my second shift?

Whats that supposed to mean? Are you jealous? she asked.

Yes, he admitted, men dont give gifts for nothing.

Emily smiled. Fine, I like the attention. To be honest, Im a little jealous of your overtime toowhos this mysterious new person youre seeing?

No one but you, Michael said. The work problems are sorted now; the new software lets me finish everything during office hours, so there wont be any more late nights.

Trust slowly rebuilt itself in their household. Yet now and then, after a long day, Emily would place another pricey box of chocolates on the kitchen table. When Michael gave her a reproachful look, she would grin and say, My clients give these sweets from the heart, and I cant turn them down.

Through all the misunderstandings, they learned that honest conversation and a willingness to listen are the true gifts that keep a marriage strong.
