“I’m leaving you, and you’ll never see the child again!” shouted Jane. “I want us to have a proper familyno outsiders!”

“Jane, calm down! There are no outsiders in our family!” Alexander tried to soothe his wife. “Emily is our daughter too!”

“Alex, let’s send Emily back to the orphanage!”

“Have you lost your mind? ‘Send her back’? How can you even say that?” Alexander stared at her in disbelief.

“It’s simplewe just take her back! Were going to have our own child soon. Why do we need someone elses?”

“Jane, maybe this is Gods way of blessing us for giving an orphaned child a home! You were the one who insisted on adopting her!”

“I never thought wed have our own babythats why I pushed for it. What kind of family doesnt have children?”

Five-year-old Emily stood outside her parents bedroom, unable to believe what shed heard. She wasnt theirs? They wanted to send her back to the orphanage?

Tears streamed down her face. Shed been so excited about having a little brother or sister And now, because of that, shed lose her family.

As if sensing something, Alex got up and walked to the door. Behind it stood Emily, crying.

“Daddy am I not really yours?” Her big, frightened eyes searched his face.

“Of course you are, sweetheart!” Alex scooped her into his arms. “Youre ours!”

“But you said you wanted to send me back! That means Im not really yours!” She wiped her tears stubbornly.

“Yes, we brought you home from the orphanage, but that doesnt make you any less ours! We love you so much! Mummys just overwhelmed with the baby coming Lets get you to bed.”

“I’m leaving you, and youll never see the child again!” Jane screamed. “I want a normal familyno outsiders!”

“Jane, stop! There are no outsiders here!” Alexander pleaded. “Emily is our daughter!”

“I didnt give birth to her! Shes not mine! Chooseher or me!”

Alex helped pack Emilys things.

“Youll stay with Granny for a while, just until Mummy calms down,” he told her. “Once the babys here, shell come to her senses, and well bring you home, alright?”

Emily nodded.

Shed agree to anything if it meant avoiding the orphanage. And she loved Grannykind, always spoiling her with treats.

“Granny If Mummy really wants to send me away, can I just live with you instead?” Emily asked as soon as they arrived.

Lydia Edwardovna shot her son a sharp look. He shrugged helplessly.

“Janes hormones are all over the place!”

“Of course, my darling!” Granny helped Emily out of her coat. “But Mummy would never send you awayyoure her daughter! Shes just upset, thats all.”

Two months passed. Emily stayed with Granny while her father visited less and less, torn between work and the hospital where Jane was on bed rest.

One morning, as Granny made breakfast, Emily stared out the window. Spotting her fathers car, she gasped.

“Granny! Daddys here!”

“This early?” Lydia frowned.

He never came before lunch. Sensing trouble, she told Emily to stay in the kitchen and went to meet him.

“Jane didnt make it last night. The labour it was too much. The baby didnt survive either.” Alexander collapsed onto the hallway bench.

The three of them sat in the kitchen, untouched tea cooling in their cups.

“Mum, Im taking Emily home. Its time.”

“If you need me I can stay with you for a while,” Lydia offered softly.

“Thanks, Mum”

Emily admired her new hair ribbons. Soon, shed be starting schoolher crisp uniform and bright backpack ready.

The front door clicked open. Daddy!

“Daddy!” She rushed to greet himbut he wasnt alone. Beside him stood a petite woman.

“Sweetheart, this is Liz. Shell be living with us now!” Alexander forced a smile.

“Hello, Emily!” Liz held out a bouquet. “For your first day of school.”

Emily ignored the flowers and stormed off to her room.

“Dont take it personally,” Alexander murmured. “Shes really sweet once you get to know her.”

“Im sure well be friends,” Liz replied.

“Yeah, right!” Emily slammed her door.

Alex and Liz married quietly. Soon, a promotion kept him at work late most nights, leaving Liz to care for Emily alone. She tried everythinghelping with homework, attending school meetings, taking her to the cinema and cafés.

Slowly, Emily softened. The house filled with warmth.

But the end of the school year brought another shockLiz was pregnant. Emily locked herself in her room, crying. Liz knocked, pleading.

“Emily, please dont cry! I love you! Id never give you away! Youll always be my girl!”

“Really?” Emily emerged, tear-streaked.

“Of course!” Liz hugged her tight. “Youre my daughter!”

Months later, Emily cradled her baby brother, marvelling at his tiny fingers.

“Mum, look how funny he is!” The word slipped out before she realised.

Liz hid her tears of joy and wrapped her arms around them both.

Two years later, Emily was in Year 4 when tragedy struckAlexander died in a car crash. She and Liz moved through the days mechanically, caring for little Colin, neither daring to speakwords brought tears. Colin, confused, acted out.

One evening, Liz sat beside Emily.

“We cant go on like this. Life doesnt stop. We have to keep living. Alright?”

“Alright,” Emily whispered.

But trouble never comes alone. Just as they found their footing, a stern woman knockeda social worker.

“Emily must come with me. She has no legal guardian now.”

“What? Im right here!” Liz protested.

“Show me the adoption papers.” There were none. “Exactly. Grannys too old, and youre no relation. Pack your things, Emily.”

Unlike Liz, Emily didnt cry. She barely cared what happened next. Her worst fear had come trueshe was alone.

“Ill get you back!” Liz called after her. But Emily didnt believe her.

Who wanted an orphan? When Daddy was alive, shed been loved. Now, she was nothing. Especially not to Liz, who had her own child.

Liz visited often, but Emily refused to see her. Shed watch from the window as Liz waited on the bench, then turned away. Eventually, the visits stopped.

“Just as I thought. She got bored playing mum.”

Two months later, a boy named Jake smirked at her.

“Emily! The headmistress wants you.”

“What now? I didnt do anything!”

“Congratulations,” the headmistress said. “Youve been placed with a family!”

“I dont want a family,” Emily muttered.

“Like it or not, pack your things.”

Emily obeyed, numb. Outside stood Liz.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came for you.”

“Ive already been adopted.”

“By me.”

“What?”

“I told youyoure my daughter. Single mothers face hurdles, but I proved I could provide for you. And, well bribes still work. Were a proper family now. Come homeColin misses you.”

Emilys voice cracked. “Okay Mum.”

Love isnt about bloodits about choice. And sometimes, the family we find is the one we were meant to have all along.
