July 7th! This Can’t Be Happening! Just a Coincidence. And the Name Andrew Too.

**The Seventh of July!**

Vera couldnt believe it. *It cant be just a coincidence. But the name Andrew too?* She stared at the portrait, hoping to see something familiar.

In the HR office of the town council, the clerk finished processing the paperwork for the new employee and picked up the phone.

*”Mrs. Andrews, could you come in? Your new cleaner is here.”*

Moments later, a stern woman entered and addressed the older newcomer.

*”Youre the new cleaner?”*

*”Yes.”*

*”Im the facilities managerEleanor Andrews,”* she introduced herself briskly. *”And you are?”*

*”Vera,”* the woman replied before correcting herself. *”Vera Alexandra.”*

*”Come, Ill show you your workspace.”* They stepped out, Eleanor continuing, *”Youll be responsible for the entire third floor”*

***

Vera was overjoyed to have landed this job. Smiling, she surveyed her new domain.

*”Two years until retirement, and I can even stay on afterward. Eight hundred pounds a month, plus bonuses! At least Derek and I will manage comfortably. The children are grown and gone. Goodness, I dont even know the mayors name! How embarrassing if someone asks. At lunch, Ill check the photo display downstairs.”*

***

On her way back from the canteen, she paused by the portrait gallery and read the mayors details: *Andrew Bennett, born 7th July 1983.*

*”Hes so youngnot even forty!”* Then it hit her. *Andrew? 1983?*

She turned back, rereading the birthdate.

*”The seventh of July! It cant be! Just a coincidence. But the name, Andrew Though the surname and fathers name are different. Adoptive parents can change those. Even the first name”*

She studied the portrait for a long time, searching for something she recognized.

***

The new job kept her busy, pushing aside her thoughts.

That evening, she spoke at length with Derek before he retreated to watch football in his room, as usual. Their three-bedroom house felt too big now that the children were gone. Though they still shared a bed sometimes, it was less and less frequent.

Lying alone, Veras mind wandered back to her youthand the secret she had never shared with Derek.

Before him, shed had a sonAndrew. Shed been only nineteen, penniless, living in student housing unfit for a child. After six months, she gave him up.

Three years later, she married Derek. They never asked about each others past. Soon, their own children arrivedtwo daughters, both now grown. One lived nearby, the other in London.

Vera had never built a career, working as a cleaner at a factory before it closed. A friends daughter suggested this job at the council, and she took it.

And now Mayor Andrew Bennett, born in 1983. She didnt regret her life, but she had often wondered about her son. Sometimes, she even dreamed of him. Now, she just wanted to know if he was happy.

***

Days passed.

Vera was cleaning when voices echoed down the hall. The mayor walked past, nodding at her before continuing his conversation.

For a moment, she saw *him*the boy she had loved forty years ago. Handsome, carefree, nothing like the serious man she had pictured. But Andrew Bennett was exactly who shed imagined her son would become.

But that boy had vanished the moment he learned she was pregnant, promising to find work. She waited, hopinguntil she realized hed simply run.

*Could Andrew Bennett be my son?*

*If I hadnt given him up, would he still be mayor? Yet my daughters are happy. The eldest has a house, a car. The younger is doing well. But my son*

*Would I have married Derek otherwise? Noour lives wouldve been entirely different. Or maybe Andrew Bennett isnt mine at all. How many coincidences exist in the world?*

*Does it matter? He has parentsones who raised him well. A happy childhood, a good life. Not many ordinary lads become mayor.*

***

After lunch, her younger colleague Lucy approached.

*”Hey, Vera! Were celebrating Mollys birthday on Fridayshes turning forty-five. Fancy joining us? Just chip in twenty quid and bring something nice.”*

*”Of course!”* Vera smiled, handing over the money.

***

On Friday, they gathered in an empty office, toasting with wine.

Then the door openedand the mayor walked in.

*”Happy birthday, Molly!”* He handed her a small gift.

*”Stay and join us!”* Eleanor urged.

He hesitated, then sat beside Vera. She served him, hands trembling. She *knew* now.

He stayed twenty minutes before leaving.

*”What a man!”* Molly sighed. *”The last mayor wouldnt have bothered.”*

*”How long has he been here?”* Vera asked.

*”A year. Dont you remember the election?”*

Vera didnt. Derek handled such things.

*”His parents are wealthy,”* Lucy added. *”But guess what? Theyre not his real parents. Found out during the campaign! He didnt even react.”*

*”How do you know all this?”*

*”The old mayors deputy dug it uptried to keep her boss in power. But people chose Andrew.”*

*”Does he know who his real parents are?”* Vera pressed.

*”Doesnt seem to. He loves the ones who raised himand why not? Hes a good man.”*

Vera gazed at the door where hed left. Her heart swelled with joyand sorrow. *Hes happy. Thats enough.*

Smiling, she whispered in her heart:

*”I wont disturb you, my son. But Ill always be near.”*

**Life teaches us that some questions are better left unansweredfor the happiness of others is worth more than our own peace of mind.**
