When Eleanor came home from work on a Friday evening, she had no idea her life was about to change forever. Pushing open the door, she called out as usual:

“Darling, Im home!”

Silence. The house felt eerily still.

“Thats odd He should be here by now,” she thought, heading to the bedroom.

She pushed the door openand froze. Vincent, her husband, stood by the bed, shoving clothes into a suitcase in a hurry.

“Vincent What are you doing?” she whispered, unable to believe her eyes.

“Im leaving,” he replied flatly, not even glancing at her.

“Leaving? Why?! Whats happened?”

“Its because of your father,” he snapped, irritated.

“My father? Whats he got to do with this?”

Eleanor couldnt make sense of his words, his meaning, or what was happening. Right before her eyes, the life shed poured love, patience, and warmth into was crumbling.

Theyd met when Eleanor was twenty-eight. Vincent was eight years olderconfident, charming, worldly. Back then, shed thought shed found *the one*. Family, friends, everyone insisted it was time to settle down. “The clocks ticking,” theyd say. “Youre not getting any younger.” Soon, Eleanor started seeing every suitor as a potential husbandwhich, naturally, scared most of them off.

But Vincent was different. Theyd been introduced at a café by a colleague, and conversation flowed. He was polite, attentive. And when he found out Eleanor owned her own flat, drove a new car, had a senior council position, *and* her father was a wealthy businessman well, he suddenly became *even more* affectionate.

A year later, they had a lavish weddingall paid for by her father. Vincent didnt object. In fact, he happily accepted a job as a sales manager in his father-in-laws company.

At first, married life seemed like a fairy tale: holidays abroad, fancy dinners, gifts. Only one tiny detail ruined itVincent *never* paid for anything. It was always Eleanor. At first, she didnt mind. Then she started asking. Then *begging*.

“Why do I have to support everything?” she complained to a friend. “I want to feel cared for, like a woman should!”

But Vincent just laughed.

“Dont be silly, love. Its fine. Stop worrying about money.”

At work, he barely lifted a finger, spent hours on his phone, and hoarded his salary in his own account. Eleanor hadnt a clue.

Then she fell ill. Badly. A month in hospital. Her parents visited daily; Vincent, rarely. When she finally came home, she was horrified: filth, unwashed dishes, rubbish everywhere.

“You didnt clean *anything*?!” she exclaimed.

“Why would I? Thats womens work,” he replied, bored.

“But I was in *hospital*, Vincent! And you expect me to clean up after you?!”

“Youre home now, arent you? So just do it.”

Shaking with weakness, Eleanor hired a cleaning crew. The doctor warned herrecovery would take at least a year. Trying for a baby? Out of the question.

A year later, when doctors finally gave the all-clear, she told her husband, thrilled.

“Can you believe it? We can We can start planning!”

“Im busy. Nows not a good time,” he muttered, glued to his PlayStation controllerthe very console *shed* bought him, now his greatest passion.

Weeks passed. He kept ignoring her. Until one day, he confessed:

“Look, Eleanor Im leaving. And I dont want a child with you.”

“What are you *talking* about?!”

“I dont love you. Never did. I was with you because it was *convenient*. Flat, money, car. Now Im bored. I dont need you anymore.”

“Vincent, you cant do this After everything Ive fought for, everything Ive waited for!”

“Not my problem. Im free.”

He zipped up his suitcase, tossed in the console, and walked out.

Eleanor stopped eating, stopped sleeping. She sat at home, staring into space. Three days later, her worried parents burst in. Her father, seeing her like that, could barely contain his fury.

They took her to their countryside cottage. Vincent was fired that same night. Shortly after, Eleanors father, William, made a few callsand just like that, his son-in-laws account was frozen. Every penny of his “savings” vanished.

Vincent had nothing left: no job, no home. He could barely afford a rented room. As for what to do next? No clue.

Eleanor, months later, found a new job. There, she met a man named James. He wasnt young, but he was honest, steady, and from the very first look, treated her with kindness and respect.

Six months later, a miracle: two lines on a test. Tears, laughter, a phone call to her parentsand endless gratitude that, one day, shed found the courage to say *enough*.
