She Cheated on Her Husband Just Once Before the Wedding: He Called Her Fat and Said She Wouldn’t Fit into Her Wedding Dress.

on

Emily cheated on her husband just once, before the wedding. He called her fat and said she wouldnt fit into her bridal gown. Hurt, she went out with her girlfriends to a club in London, drank too much, and woke up in a strange flat next to a handsome bloke with blue eyes. The shame was unbearable! She never told James, forgave his insults, and even started a diet. She quit drinkingwhich was easy once she found out she was pregnant.

Their daughter was born right on time, a beautiful little girl with blue eyes, and James was completely smitten. For five years, Emily told herself everything was finetheir daughter had blue eyes because her grandad did too. And if her hair was curly, so what? Emily tried hard to forget the bloke with the tousled hair whose name she couldnt recall. But deep down, her mothers instinct whispered that the girl wasnt Jamess. Maybe thats why she put up with his night-outs, his frequent work trips, his endless criticisms about her looks and cooking. For their daughter, family mattered: she adored her dad, and what man doesnt stray?

“Tough it outwhere else would you go?” her mum said. “Weve no roomGrans bedridden, your brothers moved his fiancée in. Where would I put you all? I warned youyou shouldnt have put the house in your mother-in-laws name. Now look where you are!”

Emily toughed it out. But it didnt matterone day, James left her. Said hed met someone else, even cried, promising hed always be Lucys dad but couldnt fight his feelings. His mum, whod doted on her granddaughter, muttered after the divorce:

“Get a paternity testyou might be paying child support for nothing!”

Emily frozeshe thought she was the only one who doubted. Turns out, she wasnt.

“Are you mad?” James snapped. “Lucys my daughteranyone with eyes can see that.”

Maybe his mum was right. A year after the divorce, Emily landed in hospital with appendicitisand there, behind a white surgical mask, were those same blue eyes.

“Im sorryhave we met before?” the surgeon asked.

Emily shook her head frantically, praying he wouldnt remember. But he did. The next day, during his rounds, he teased,

“Hope you wont dash off like last time.”

She flushed scarlet and vowed to leave ASAP. But she didnt expect that, over those hospital days, Daniel would make her want to stay.

She didnt mention their daughterjust that she had a little girl. No hints he was the father.

Daniel pieced it together the first time he saw Lucy. Nervous, he bought her a doll and bombarded Emily with questionshow to act, what to say.

“Listen,” he began, “when I was a kid, my mum fell for another bloke, but my sister never accepted him. In the end, Mum sent him packing. I dont want thatI want to be Lucys second dad.”

Emily crumbled. When he saw Lucy, froze for seconds, then shot her a baffled lookit was clear. He knew.

“Whats the difference?” Emily thought. “Id have to tell him eventually.”

Bracing for fury (like her marriage taught her), she was stunned when Daniel pulled her close and whispered, *”What a bloody brilliant miracle.”*

At first, Lucy seemed fine with Daniel. But when Emily gently asked if shed mind him moving in, the girl burst into tears:

“I thought Daddy was coming back! Let Daniel live somewhere else!”

Emily smoothed things over, but Daniel was gutted.

“Shes *my* daughter! You *have* to tell them!”

“James couldnt take it. Neither could Lucy. To her, *hes* her dad. And to James, shes his only childhis new wife cant have kids. His mum told me.”

Resentful Daniel, tantrum-throwing LucyEmily juggled the chaos with makeshift rules:

– James got visits (no run-ins with Daniel).
– Lucy was *never* left alone with Daniel (they fought).
– Even on Mothers Day, she prepped cards so Lucy wouldnt blurt something hurtfulprompting Daniel to spill the truth.

Then Emily got pregnant againand panicked. What if this baby looked just like Lucy? What if James worked it out? What if Lucy grew jealous? What if Daniel told her while Emily was in labour?

The plan? Her mum would take Lucy. But life had other ideas: a day before the birth, her mum was hospitalised with gallstones. Her stepdad refused another kid, her brother and his wife worked full-time. She tried calling Jamesbut he was abroad, and leaving Lucy with his mum felt wrong.

“I cant look after *my own daughter*?” Daniel fumed.

The birth was rougha C-section, then a longer stay due to newborn jaundice. At home, tensions simmered. “He mustve told her,” Emily fretted.

Chatting with neighbours, they urged honesty”The truth always comes out. Youll pay for lying.” Spurred on, she called James:

“I need to confess something.”

“Confess *what*?”

Long pause.

“About Lucy”

“What about her?”

“You knew didnt you?”

“Knew *what*?”

“Shes not yours.”

A beat. Then:

“Your mates? Yeah. Ive known for years.”

“*He* told you?”

“Didnt need to. Got tested before basic trainingwas told I couldnt have kids. Kept it quiet, hoped for a miracle. Then Mum nagged so I checked.”

“But *why*?”

Emily couldnt grasp why hed kept it secret.

“What could I *do*?” he shot back. “Not *her* fault! And dont *you* tell her! I played along because I couldnt lose her.”

Homecoming was surreal. Watching Lucy and Daniel, they were oddly quietexchanging glances.

“Howd you manage without me?” Emily asked nervously once the baby slept and Lucy was drawing.

“*Brilliantly*,” Daniel grinned. “You fuss too muchwe got on fine.”

“You *told* her?”

“*No*! *You* banned it!”

“So whys she so quiet?”

Daniel smirked. “Ask her.”

Emily found Lucy tongue-out, colouring fiercely. The drawing? Three adults. Two kids.

“Whos this?”

“Isnt it *obvious*? You, Daddy, Daniel, me, and baby Oliver.”

“Oh. Its lovely.”

“Mum can someone have *two* dads?” (*He told her!*)

“Sometimes yes,” Emily said carefully.

“So can I call Daniel Dad too? Hes *cool*. We built a LEGO castle, saw fish, and this funny old bloke at the shop asked what my dad does. Didnt know if he meant *Daniel*, so I said doctor. Its *proper* neat having a doctor dad. I *asked* him, but wanted to check with you.”

A lump clogged Emilys throatshed trapped herself. James forgave her. Daniel would too. But if Lucy ever learned the truth

She hugged her tight.

“Course you can, love. Think hed *love* that. Just dont tell Daddy yet, alright?”
