I Wanted to Surprise My Husband at Work with Lunch – Then I Overheard a Shocking Conversation at the Door

on

I wished to surprise my husband one afternoon and decided to take lunch to him at his office. As I approached the door, I overheard a conversation that left me bitterly disappointed.

I am twenty-nine years old. Perhaps I am the most naïve woman alive, for until recently, I believed my family was happythat I had chosen well. But I was wrong. My husband turned out to be a selfish betrayer, and even now, I struggle to believe he could do this to me.

We have known each other for ten years, six of them married. His name is Edward, and he had always been attentive, providing for me and our children. We have a son and a daughter. With my support, he built a successful business, one that brought in a comfortable income.

I once worked as a sales assistant, but lately, I had started my own online clothing shop. While my daughter was at nursery and my son napped, I worked, earning my own keep.

My weight had always hovered around eight and a half stone. After bearing children, I gained over three. At first, I hoped caring for two little ones would help me shed the pounds, but it wasnt as simple as I imagined. I set my mind to losing weighteating properly, exercising, drinking water, cutting out breadyet the scale refused to budge. It saddened me deeply, and I grew self-conscious.

After my second confinement, I no longer recognised myself. I felt neither womanly nor desirable. And Edward changed before my eyes. He stopped kissing me, holding melet alone anything more. I scarcely remember the last time we spoke of anything beyond household matters.

I admit, before the children came, I had been far more confident, far more pleasing to the eye. Now, I could barely stand my own reflection. I knew our marriage had suffered for it, and so I resolved to mend things. That day, I meant to surprise him. I brought his lunch to the officeonly to hear him say:

“Dont worry, my love, Ill come by after work. Ive told my wife Im swamped. She hasnt the faintest idea you exist!”

I did not step inside. I turned and left.

Does he not realise I gained weight bearing his children? He is no Adonis himselfyet he fixates on my flaws. He too carries extra weight.

Now I wonderdoes he take me for a fool?

I couldnt bring myself to tell Edward what Id heard. What should I do? File for divorce? But the childrenhow would they fare without their father? Pretend nothing happened? I doubt I could bear it.

For now, Ive resolved to care for myself. Ive joined a gym. First, Ill show him what hes lost. Then, we shall see.
