You’re Not a Wife, You’re a Maid. You Don’t Have Children!

Youre not my wife, youre just a maid. You dont have any kids!
Mum, Poppys moved in here. Were renovating the flat, its unlivable. Theres a spare room, why does she have to stay in the dust? said Jack, Poppys husband.

Clearly that idea didnt bother him, but his wife and motherinlaw felt differently. Jacks mother never liked her daughterinlaw.

I have to work, I cant stay here, Poppy whispered.

She works from home, so she needs peace and quiet. Jack spends the whole day at his office, which makes sharing a roof with his mum a nightmare. Poppys used to being alone in the house, so anyone else just feels like an intrusion.

Poppy stared at her motherinlaw, at a loss for words. The older lady didnt want Poppy there, but there seemed no other option. They all sat down at the table for dinner.

Poppy, could you pass me the signature salad, please? Jack asked.
Jack, dont eat that chemistry. Ive made you a different one, its healthier, the motherinlaw complained.

Poppys face changed. Her husband is allergic to tomatoes how could his mum forget that? When Jack was a boy she never paid attention to it. Shed always said, No need to run to the doctor, just give him a pill and hell be fine.

Hes allergic. Why did you put tomatoes in the salad? Poppy asked.
What are you on about? Its just one tomato, nothing serious, the mum replied.
Hell get sick.
Poppy, calm down. He isnt allergic. His own mother knows him better than you do.
Im his wife. I look after my husband.
Youre not a wife, youre a servant. Youve got no children! When you do, well talk then.

Poppy jumped up from the table and rushed to the bedroom. Her motherinlaw always hit the sore spot. Jack hurried over to comfort her.

Jack, Im sorry. Ill just go back to my parents place or the office. I cant keep living with your mum.
Let me talk to her. Shell stop!
No, weve gone over this a million times. Well never get on under the same roof.

So they had to rent a place for a while just to dodge another family blowup. Mum was of course grumbling, but she had no choice. And Poppy couldnt help feeling grateful for such a kind and understanding husband.

No. We’ve decided it’s best for you not to bring your wife and child into this apartment. We won’t tolerate the inconvenience for long, and in the end, we’ll have to ask you to leave. And then your wife will tell everyone we threw you out onto the street with a small child.
