My Niece Came to Visit, but She’s Upset That I’m Not Feeding Her!

Published

on

My niece Emily turned up at my flat, only to sulk because I wasnt feeding her.

I share a house with my sister Sarah, but we live in different towns. Her daughter has long dreamed of studying at the University of Oxford, which is in the city where I live. Shell eventually move into a dorm, but for now shes arrived for a couple of weeks to sort out some paperwork and maybe sit a few exams. I never asked about the details; I just know that its normal to be in town before starting university. Sarah agreed that Emily could stay with me for the spell.

We never talked about who would put food on the table. When a parent stays silent on the matter, they usually work it out between themselves. I walked into the lounge and found Emily staring off, looking annoyed. Whats wrong? I asked. She said she had assumed Id treat her to a warm lunch. I snapped back, Im not going to feed you, and Im sticking to my own schedule. I have to dash now! Call your mother and ask her to transfer some money onto your card, then buy some biscuits, a couple of rolls, and a cup of tea. Ive run out of tea, by the way. Youre 18, Emily, you can manage that yourself.

Margaret, Emilys mother, hasnt spoken to me in ages. She doesnt know that, once the kids left the nest, my husband vanished to an unknown corner of the world and I threw myself into work. My job brings a brutal, irregular timetable, so Im rarely home, and Ive lost the energy for household chores. A proper nights sleep feels like a luxury.

Im not about to sacrifice anything for a guest. Its wonderful, of course, to see Emily. Shes grown into a lovely, confident young woman, but Im no longer the carefree Aunt Lucy who could whip up a feast for an elephant without breaking a sweat. Let her shop for groceries, chop the veg, boil, fry, or steam whatever she likes. Better yet, let her pick up something readymade so she doesnt risk wrecking my stove or my flat.

She fell into a sulk, quiet anger simmering each day, apparently expecting a full board with her mother. Perhaps things will settle down. Its hard to abruptly stop being the everhelpful, easygoing aunt after years of maintaining smooth relations with everyone in my circle. Im still friendly enough to offer a free bed, though the allinclusive part is missing. I went to a therapist for advice on how to gently explain to my family that Im no longer as functional as I once was. They need to expect a little less from me now.

The experience taught me that caring for others doesnt mean abandoning yourself. Boundaries are a kind of love, and by setting them clearly we keep both our dignity and our relationships intact.
