I’ve Become a Surrogate Twice: Now My Children and I Have Everything We Need for a Good Life

Published

on

I became a surrogate twice, and now my kids and I have everything we need to live comfortably.

I had my first daughter when I was only eighteen. Delivering her was a breeze, and I realized that birth isnt as terrifying as people make it out to be. By then, commercial surrogacy was already a welltrotted path in the UK, so I started giving it genuine thought.

My family wasnt exactly rolling in it. My parents struggled to keep my three sisters and me fed and clothed. Id married at seventeen, and with my husband James and our newborn, we were just scraping by. We had no cash, no flat of our own, and barely enough room to swing a cat. Thats when the idea of surrogacy slipped into my mind. James wasnt thrilled; I tried to sell him on it, insisting it might be the quickest way out of our financial jam.

A short while later we welcomed a second child. Things got tighter, and James finally threw in the towel, unable to bear the strain any longer. I was left with two little girls on my own. Fortunately, my mum Susan and my sisters Laura and Megan stepped in; while I worked, they looked after Poppy and Harriet. Still, the bills kept piling up, and I decided it was time to chase the plan that had been simmering in my head for years.

I drove up to Manchester and applied to a reputable surrogacy agency there. We tried implanting embryos a few times, but nothing took hold. The last attempt ended in a miscarriage, which left me feeling gutted.

Back home I thought Id given up, but six months later a new advert caught my eye: a clinic promising generous terms. I rang them up, thinking, What have I got to lose? If it works, brilliant; if not, well, thats life.

This time everything fell into place. For twelve months we lived in a lovely twobed flat in a brandnew building. The intended parents were far from stingy; they treated us to topshelf groceries, bought toys for the girls, and even covered our trips to the cinema and the zoo. Nine months later I gave birth to a healthy, handsome baby boy.

With the surrogacy fee in hand we were able to buy a cosy tworoom house in our neighbourhood back in our hometown, and we still had a whole year ahead of us to enjoy without pinching pennies.

Two years on I became a surrogate again, this time for a family from China, and delivered another child.

Today I live in a spacious house with my daughters, who have everything they could wish for. Some people might raise an eyebrow at my choices, but I see nothing wrong with giving my family a good life, even if the route is a little unconventional.
