I’m 45 and I No Longer Entertain Guests at Home: Why I Prefer Celebrating in Restaurants and Value My Comfort Over Hosting Unruly Visitors

I’m 45 years old now, and I no longer welcome guests into my home.

Some people, when visiting, seem to forget they’re guests; they’re inconsiderate, quick to offer unwelcome advice, and in no rush to leave.

I used to be someone who loved having everyone round, but I’ve changed my approach rather swiftly. Once I crossed that forty-year mark, I gave up on inviting people over. Why bother? It’s really more hassle than it’s worth.

My last birthday was celebrated at a lovely restaurant. I absolutely enjoyed it and have decided that’s the way forward. Now, let me explain why I feel this way.

Hosting even a simple gathering at home is expensive. Even a regular supper costs a fair bit, and if you host for a special occasion, the bill climbs even higher. Guests might turn up with a modest bottle of wine or a box of biscuitseveryone’s skint these days, after all. And then theyll linger late into the night. I want to relax, not stare at a mountain of washing up or tidy the house at midnight.

Im no longer waiting for anyone behind the doors of my little flat. I clean and cook as it suits me. The days after holiday get-togethers used to leave me completely knackered and in a bit of a funk. Now, I spend the holidays with time left for a good soak in the bath and an early night.

I have far more free time and use it wisely. My friends might pop in for a cuppa, but I don’t worry about not having a spread laid out. I speak my mindif I need some space to myself, I politely point to the door. I suppose it might seem a bit blunt, but it doesnt really bother me anymore. These days, my own comfort comes first.

Funny thing is, the people most eager to visit others are rarely the ones to invite you back to theirs. Its easier for them to take advantage of someone elses hospitality without having to do the cleaning or cooking themselves.

Do you often have people round? Would you call yourself welcoming?

If theres one thing Ive learnt, its that theres nothing wrong with putting yourself first and finding your peacesometimes, the best company you can keep is your own.
