I Pushed My Son to Divorce His Wife—And Now I Regret It…

Published

on

Managed to make my son get a divorce and Ive regretted it ever since…

Yesterday, my neighbour Margaret caught me in the stairwell to grumble again: My daughter-in-law brought my granddaughter round for the weekend and I still cant get the child to eat properly! She keeps telling me, Mummy said princesses dont eat much! Takes two bites, and thats that! Shes practically see-through, poor little thing.

Margaret never warmed to her sons wife, Emma. In fact, the moment she met Emma, she disliked her mainly because Emma was a whole seven years older than her son, Peter, whod just finished school at the time.

She was the first woman he ever dated! Margaret would vent to me. No wonder he was enchanted by her. She won him over with all that experience, thats what happened!

Emma, though, was a striking woman always well-dressed, looked after herself, building a career. I couldnt see much mystery in Peter falling head over heels for her. Men, after all, often fall for what they see. She was certainly worth looking at.

Emma followed a strict diet and believed in balanced eating, which she passed on to her daughter: eat sensibly, dont overindulge, look after your health and figure.

Within months of dating, Emma became pregnant. Perhaps to spite her meddling future mother-in-law, who seemed determined to drive a wedge between them, or maybe because she desperately wanted to settle down. Or perhaps it was just chance. Either way, Peter was resolute he would marry her. Hed just turned 18, she was 25.

After getting his exam results, Peter started an apprenticeship, juggling studies and work, since he and Emma wanted to live apart from both their parents. First they rented a small flat, then, pooling savings, they bought a tiny bedsit.

They were happy in their new start, but Margaret never relented. She always found fault with Emma: she cooked wrong, didnt iron shirts, dressed their daughter in odd colours. According to Margaret, Emma had nothing going for her, only flaws and errors. Shed nag constantly, and sigh to Peter about his wifes shortcomings.

Eventually, Emma minimized all contact with her mother-in-law. She took charge, walking her daughter to nursery, gymnastics, and chess club. Shed only just finish at work before racing between the nursery and after-school activities all the while squeezing in her own trips to the gym, getting her nails done, booking a haircut. Home became something she barely saw.

Peter would come in to an empty flat: his daughter was busy, his wife either out with her, or wrapped up in her own routine.

One evening, the door knocked it was Sarah, a 38-year-old single mother who lived down the corridor with her two teenagers. There was a burst pipe in their shared kitchen downstairs and she asked Peter to lend a hand before they ended up flooding the neighbours below.

Peter was practical, and quickly sorted the plumbing. While he repaired the taps, Sarah was cooking dinner bangers and mash. As thanks, she offered him a plate, and he happily accepted. He hadnt eaten a proper homemade meal in weeks Emma never made hearty, old-fashioned dishes, she simply didn’t have time.

Sarah began inviting Peter to dinner most evenings while Emma and his daughter were out, hed spend the time in the common kitchen, chatting, eating homemade pies, sharing tea and stories. One thing led to another, and before long, their friendship turned into something deeper. Even they were surprised by how easily theyd come to rely on their cosy evenings together.

Its impossible to keep secrets in a block of flats too many eyes and ears about. Eventually, one of the neighbours let slip to Emma that Peter was spending more than just friendly time with Sarah.

The row when it broke was deafening the entire building could probably hear Emma as she threw Peter out of the flat, chucking his bags after him into the corridor.

It was too late to go home to his parents, and he had nowhere else to turn but Sarah, who welcomed him.

At the time, their daughter was 6, Peter was 25, Emma 32, and Sarah 39.

Margaret, my neighbour, was overjoyed at first she thought shed finally got her own way. But when she heard Peter had moved in with a woman not only with two children, but 14 years his senior, even she was speechless. I was quite taken aback, after all those years of her scolding Emma for being just seven years older now she suddenly let it all go. Perhaps she realised shed helped bring about her own defeat.

This whole affair and Peter and Emmas divorce happened about 15 years ago. Since then, Peter has stayed with Sarah, though they never had children together. Despite the age gap, they live in complete harmony. Peter is 40 now, Sarah 54. Margaret welcomes them both into her home now, calm and uncritical everything peaceful, almost idyllic. And I can see that Peters happy in a way he never was before.

If theres something Ive learnt from watching all this, its that happiness doesnt always follow the rules we think it should sometimes, the heart finds its own path, no matter what anyone else thinks.
