During Their Divorce, a Wealthy Husband Leaves His Wife an Abandoned Farm in the Middle of Nowhere—B…
During our divorce, Ian admittedly well-off mandecided to let my wife have an old farm in the middle of nowhere. I thought shed struggle, but what happened a year later took me completely by surprise.
Diary Entry
William, you know I dont need you here, dont you?said Emily with resolve. Id suggest you return to London.
Which city do you mean?I replied, wearied by the commotion. Shed just been betrayed by the person she trusted mostI could see she was past the point of arguing. Wed started from nothing, sold the flat, and invested everything in our business. Truth be told, my contribution was only a small room in a shared house, while Emilys wit and grit made us successful. We led a modest life, hopping from one rental to another, until at last, stability was within reach.
Over time, I began acting as if I were the lord of the manor. Craftily, I transferred all our possessions into my name, ensuring Emily would get nothing from the divorce. Once everything was secure, I set the whole process in motion.
Do you think thats fair, William?she asked, disappointment heavy in her voice.
I shrugged, feigning indifference. Spare me, Emily. Youve stopped contributing for ages. I do all the workyou do nothing.
You asked me to take a break and focus on myself, she replied, cool as ever.
I sighed, letting my irritation show. Ive had enough of these pointless squabbles. By the way, do you remember that old farm I inherited from Mr. Barker, my late boss? The piece of land out in Kent thats not worth a penny? Perfect for you. Take it or youll be left with nothing.
Emily gave a rueful smile. She knew exactly what I was up to. After twelve years, she finally saw the stranger I’d become.
Fine, but on one condition: make sure the farm is properly signed over to me.
No problem. Itll even save me on tax,I said, smirking.
That was that. Emily packed her bags and moved to a nearby inn, determined to start freshwhether it meant a neglected cottage or a barren patch of land, shed find out soon enough. If it didnt work, she could always come back to the city or find another way to rebuild.
She filled the car with just the essentials, leaving the rest behind with me and my new partner. If Id assumed I could still rely on Emilys sharpnesswell, I was fooling myself. My new girlfriend, whom Emily had glimpsed just a handful of times, seemed more arrogant than bright.
With a mocking grin, I handed Emily the deeds. Good luck.
And to you,she replied, calm as ever.
Dont forget to send me a snap of the cows,I joked.
Without a word, she closed the car door and drove off. As she left the city behind, tears spilled down her cheeks. She never realised how long shed been crying until a tap on the window broke her reverie.
Are you all right, dear? My husband and I have seen you sat here a while,an elderly lady asked kindly.
Emily glanced at the woman, catching sight of a bus stop in the rear-view mirror. She smiled faintly.
Im all rightjust felt a bit overwhelmed.
The woman nodded in understanding. Were just back from hospital. Our neighbour is there all alone, never gets visitors. Are you heading by any chance towards Canterbury?
Emilys brows shot up in surprise. Canterbury? Thats where the farm is, isnt it?
Yes, or whats left of it. No ones looked after it since the owner died, save a few who pop in out of goodwill.
Emilys smile strengthened. Well, as it happens, thats where Im headed. Hop inIll take you.
The elderly lady settled in up front, her husband climbing in behind.
Im Emily, she offered as she drove.
Im Dorothy Dawson, and this is Albert, the lady replied warmly.
On the way, Emily learned the whole story of the farmwhod tried nicking the feed, who still cared for ailing animals, how derelict the place now looked.
When she arrived, she found fields overgrown and a half-collapsed barn, sheltering just twenty scraggly cows. Still, she made up her mind to stay and fight for a new beginning.
A year later, Emily beamed with pride as eighty cattle grazed calmly on her lush, well-tended fields. Shed transformed the forsaken farm into a thriving business. It hadnt been easyshe sold her jewellery to buy fodder, spent her last pounds, but now her produce was in demand even from neighbouring counties.
One day, a young woman called Harriet brought her the newspaper, pointing out a deal on refrigerated lorries. Emily instantly recognised the listed numberit was my companys. With a sly smile, she told Harriet to phone and offer five percent more, on the condition the trucks werent shown to anyone else.
When Emily arrived to inspect them, there I wasstunned to see her.
Buying them?I asked, barely believing it.
For the farm you gave me. Its doing rather wellwere expanding, she replied, calm as ever.
I was lost for words. While my life unravelled, Emily had moved forward, past the ruins of our marriage.
In the end, Emily found real love in John, a mechanic who had helped her improve the farm. Together, they christened their daughter on the very land Emily had rebuilt, while I could only watch from the fringes as my own life fell apart.
If this chapter taught me anything, its not to underestimate the quiet resilience of othersespecially those we think weve left in the dust.
