A Young Boy Awoke to the Sound of His Mother’s Moans

Hey, let me tell you this story that really tugged at my heartstrings.
So, theres this little boy named Matthew who woke up one morning to the sound of his mum groaning in pain.
He rushed over to her bed, Mum, are you hurting? he asked.
She managed a weak smile, Matthew, could you get me some water? Without a second thought, he dashed off to the kitchen and came back holding a full mug, Here you go, Mum.
Drink up.
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
His mum said, Go on, open it, son!
I think Grandma Ninas here. It turned out to be their neighbour, Nina, holding a big mug in her hand.
She came in, felt Matthews mums forehead and frowned, Youve got a fever!
I brought you some hot milk with a bit of butter. Matthews mum sighed, I already had my medicine. Nina shook her head, You should be in hospital, getting proper treatment.
You need good food too, but your fridge is empty. Tears welled up in Matthews mums eyes, Nina, I spent all my money on medicine.
Nothing seems to help. Nina sat by her bedside and gently stroked her hair, You should go to hospital.
Wholl look after Matthew if something happens to you? Matthews mum was quiet.
Youre not even thirty, no husband, no money, Nina continued.
Alright, dont cry.
Ill call the doctor.
She pulled out her mobile and managed to arrange for someone to come around that day.
When the doctor arrives, send Matthew over to fetch me. Nina left, and Matthew followed her out to the hallway.
Grandma Nina, he whispered, Mum wont die, will she? Nina sighed, I dont know, darling.
Youll have to ask God to help.
Your mum doesnt really believe in him, but maybe you should go to church, light a candle, and pray.
It cant hurt. She left and Matthew wandered back to his mum, deep in thought.
Mum, you must be hungry.
We dont have much, do we?
Bring two glasses, she said.
When he brought them, she poured what little milk remained for them to share.
He drank but was still hungry.
His mum noticed, and despite her weakness, grabbed her purse and handed him a tenner.
Pop down to Marks Bakery and buy yourself a couple of rolls.
Eat them on the way back.
Ill try and make us something else.
She saw him off, then painfully made her way to the kitchen.
The fridge held some cheap canned fish, a bit of margarine, a couple of potatoes, and an onion on the window ledge.
I suppose I should make soup, she muttered.
Her head spun and she sank onto a stool, exhausted.
Inside, she worried, Whats happening to me?
Ive no strength left.
Half my holidays gone, my savings too.
If I cant get back to work, howll I get Matthew ready for school?
Hes starting Year One next month.
No relatives, no one to help.
And now this illness Shouldve gone to the GP straight away.
If I have to stay in hospital, wholl look after Matthew alone? Somehow, she forced herself up and started peeling potatoes.
Meanwhile, Matthew, so hungry, was thinking about his mum.
Yesterday, she didnt get out of bed at all.
What if she really dies?
Grandma Nina said I should ask Grandad God for help. So, he changed direction and set off towards the church.
There was another man approaching the church, too.
His name was Nick, newly back from the army.
Hed miraculously survived, although now he walked with a stick.
His face bore scars he didnt even care anymore, figured no woman would want him.
Nick had a healthy pension, enough for a comfortable life, plus some savings from his contract days.
But whats the use, really, when youre alone?
Outside the church, some homeless people gathered.
Nick pulled out a couple of £20 notes and handed them out.
Please, pray for my fallen friends, Roman and Stan. He stepped into church, bought some candles, lit them, and prayed quietly, just as the vicar had taught him.
He stood there, thinking about all the hardship he’d been through.
Nearby, Matthew, skinny and small, held his little candle, unsure what to do.
An older lady came over, smiled kindly, and helped him light it.
She showed him how to cross himself and said, Now, tell God why youre here. Matthew stared at the icon and whispered, Please, Grandad God, help my mum get well.
Its just me and her.
She hasnt got money for medicine, and soon Ill start school but I havent even got a schoolbag
Nick watched the boy as he prayed.
All of Nicks own problems suddenly felt much smaller.
He felt an urge to shout out, Why hasnt anyone helped this boy, bought mum medicine, or got him a schoolbag?
Matthew waited for a miracle.
Nick came over, a bit stern but with warmth in his eyes.
Mate, come with me, he said.
Where? Matthew looked nervously at this scary-looking man with a stick.
Well find out what your mum needs and go to the chemist, Nick promised.
Really? Matthews eyes shone.
God passed along your message to me, Nick said, smiling, and Matthew believed him.
Lets go!
Whats your name? Matthew. Call me Uncle Nick.
Back at the flat, Matthews mum was talking with Nina.
She prescribed a load, and said the medicines expensive.
Where am I supposed to find that much money?
Ive only got fifty quid left. Matthew marched in, and the voices fell silent.
Nina looked nervously at the stranger.
Matthews mum, shocked, asked, Who are you? Nick smiled kindly, Everythings going to be alright.
Lets see the prescriptions. But Ive only got fifty pounds. Well sort it, dont worry, Nick replied, putting a reassuring hand on Matthews shoulder.
She handed over the paper somehow, she sensed this scarred man had a good heart.
Nina hissed, Maria, are you nuts?
Hes a stranger! He seems kind, Nina, Maria replied, and Nina headed home.
Maria sat and waited, anxiety pushed aside by the hope that things might soon change.
The door opened, Matthew burst in smiling, Mum!
We got your medicine and loads of nice things for tea. Nick stood behind him, grinning, and suddenly his scars werent so intimidating.
Maria gave a small, grateful bow.
Thank you!
Please, come in! Nick struggled a bit to take off his shoes, clearly nervous.
He sat in the kitchen, not sure where to put his stick.
Maria helped, then apologised, Sorry, we dont have much to offer.
Mum, we bought lots! Matthew unpacked the groceries.
Maria gasped half the food was unnecessary sweets.
But there was a bag of posh tea.
Let me make some tea, she said, bustling about, and felt almost cured.
Maybe she just didnt want to seem so poorly in front of Nick.
He noticed, You alright, Maria?
You look pale. Dont worry Ill take my medicine after.
Thank you so much!
They all sat together, sipping fragrant tea, nibbling treats, and chatting.
Their eyes met now and then, and there was a sense of warmth in that tiny kitchen.
Eventually, though, Nick stood up, Thank you for the tea.
You need to focus on getting better. Maria got up too, Honestly, I dont know how to thank you. He headed for the hallway, Maria and Matthew following.
Uncle Nick, will you visit again? asked Matthew.
Of course!
As soon as your mums well, well all go out and buy your schoolbag together.
After Nick left, Maria cleared the table and washed up.
Watch some telly, son.
I need a short lie down. She lay down, and soon sleep took her.
A fortnight went by.
Marias illness faded the good medicine mustve worked wonders.
Shed even gone back to work for the end-of-month rush.
That meant shed be paid for those days so useful now August had arrived, and preparations for Matthews first year were looming.
That Saturday, they got up, had breakfast.
Matthew, get ready!
Well head to the shops, check what you need for school. Did you get paid yet? Not yet, darling.
Next Saturday.
I borrowed a hundred, so well pick up some groceries while were out.
As they got ready, the entry phone rang.
Whos that? Maria asked.
Its Nick He didnt even finish; Maria pressed the buzzer.
Mum, who was it? Matthew called.
Its Uncle Nick! Maria couldn’t hide her joy.
Hurray! Matthew cheered.
Nick walked in, looking different smart trousers, crisp shirt, stylish haircut.
Uncle Nick, I was waiting for you! Matthew ran to him.
Nicks eyes sparkled.
Hello, Maria! They both slipped effortlessly to first names, and it felt both strange and wonderful.
Ready to go? Nick grinned, Come on, Matthew needs stuff for school. But Nick, Maria hesitated, I I promised Matthew, and promises should be kept.
Maria was always careful, worrying about prices in every shop.
She had no spare cash, no family, no husband; if you didnt count the lad from college who vanished years ago.
Now, here was Nick buying everything Matthew needed for school, not even looking at the price tags, just asking for her opinion.
Weighted down with shopping bags, they took a taxi home.
Maria tried to head straight for the kitchen.
Maria, Nick stopped her, Lets all go for a walk.
Maybe grab lunch together. Mum, please! Matthew begged.
That night, Maria couldnt sleep, replaying the day over and over.
She saw the way Nick looked at her, with so much affection.
Her mind struggled Hes not handsome, and he limps, reason argued.
Her heart replied, Hes normal, kind, and looks at me with love. Hes fifteen years older. So what?
Hes like a father to Matthew. You could still find someone younger, good-looking. I dont want handsome and slim.
I want kind and reliable. But you always dreamed of someone else. Not anymore. You change your mind so quickly? I met him I love him!
Three months later, their wedding was held in the very church where Nick and Matthew had first met.
Nick and Maria stood before the altar, Nicks stick gone.
Matthew kept his eyes on the icon hed prayed to as a little boy.
He whispered, full of joy, Thank you, Grandad God!Matthew glanced from the icon up to the beaming faces of his mum and Uncle Nicknow, at last, his real family.
Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass window, painting them in colors both rich and hopeful.
Grandma Nina dabbed her eyes in the front pew, and the vicar gave each of them a gentle smile, as if blessing the love that had grown from hardship.
Outside, laughter echoed in the churchyard as Matthew chased the falling leaves with his brand-new schoolbag, Nicks old army stick swung playfully with each stride.
Maria joined them, her eyes shining brighter than ever.
For the first time in endless months, she felt strong; she had been lifted up by kindness, and now kindness surrounded them all.
Matthew grabbed Nicks hand on one side and Marias on the other, pulling them towards the bakery up the road.
Can we get rolls for everyone? he asked, grinning ear to ear.
Nick nodded, Of course, mate.
Todays for sharing. Maria squeezed their hands.
Its our new beginning, she whispered.
And so, in the golden light of a changing season, Matthew, Maria, and Nick walked forward togetherproof that miracles sometimes arrive quietly, through gentle hearts, open doors, and prayers whispered in the dark.
As they disappeared down the lane, the warmth lingeredechoing in each soul touched by their story.
