I’m 50 Now, But When I Was a Schoolgirl and Got Pregnant by My Boyfriend, My Family Disowned Me—It W…

Im 50 now, and all of this started back when I was still in school that age where youre just figuring yourself out, you know? I fell pregnant by my boyfriend at the time, and neither of us had even started working yet, both still in sixth form. When my family found out, their reaction was instant mum said Id brought shame on the house and insisted they wouldn’t be raising a baby that wasnt really theirs. One night, they told me to pack my things, and I left the house with just a small suitcase, absolutely clueless about where Id even sleep the next night.

It was my boyfriends family who took me in straight away. His mum and dad welcomed us into their home from day one. They gave us a spare bedroom, laid down some ground rules, and told us the only thing they expected was that we both finish our studies. They covered food, bills, even the doctors appointments throughout my pregnancy. I was totally dependent on them at that point.

When our son was born, my mother-in-law stayed with me at the hospital. She showed me how to bathe him, change nappies, how to settle him early in the mornings when I was just shattered. Shed look after him while I tried to catch a bit of sleep during those exhausting first weeks. My father-in-law sorted the cot and all the bits and bobs wed need for those early months.

Not long after, they actually approached us and said they didnt want us getting stuck, not moving on in life. They offered to pay for me to do nurse training. I jumped at it. I studied during the mornings; Id leave our little one with my mother-in-law. My boyfriend, meanwhile, started studying computer engineering. Both of us were knuckling down, while his parents carried on covering most of the costs.

It was tough going, Im not going to lie. We lived to a strict routine, there was no extra spending, and sometimes money barely stretched to the basics. But we never went short of a meal or support. Whenever one of us got ill or just felt completely beaten, they were right there. Theyd look after the little one so we could sit exams, do hospital placements, or pick up a few hours of work when we could find it.

Eventually, we both finished our studies and started working me as a nurse, him in his field. We got married, found a place of our own, and raised our son together. Now, at the age of 50, our marriage is still strong, and our boy grew up watching us work hard for what weve got.

As for my own family, well, I only keep in touch now and then. There were no big dramas after everything settled, but weve never gotten close again. I dont hold a grudge, but things just werent the same.

If you asked me today which family saved my life its not the one I was born into. Its my husbands family, the one that took me in when I had nowhere else to turn.
