My sister-in-law turned up uninvited last New Years Eve, and honestly, it sent the whole celebration downhill.

Confession

She was at the door with a suitcase and one of those wide grins, as if she was doing me a massive favour.
Hope you dont mind if I celebrate New Years with you lot?

It was pitch-dark out, her cab had already disappeared, and saying no wouldve made me feel like a villain.
And there it wasthe start of it all.

I just froze at the door, thinking, here we go it begins.

Come on in, I managed, stepping aside.

She burst in, shook the drizzle off her coat, and eyed our flat like she was sizing up her own property.

Oh, youve started laying out the food already! Wheres my brother, then?

In the shower.

Right, taking a break. Ill just go get changed, then. Which room am I in?

I pointed her to the small box room wed made into a study, which was hardly anything fancy. Wed been renting for a few years, saving up for a place of our own. It wasnt grand, but it was ours.

She vanished into the room, and I sloped off to the kitchen. Id been looking forward to a quiet night for just the two of usfilms, homemade grub, a bit of peace. Id even made his favourite salads.

The whole evening was ruined.

My husband came out of the bathroom and clocked my mood instantly.

Whats going on?

Weve got company.

What company?

Your sister.

He went pale.

But we didnt invite her

Exactly.

He tried to give me a hug, but I moved away. He kept insisting it was just a surprise, that she meant well, and shed only be here for a few days.
But Id seen that suitcasea proper whopper.

When she reappeared, shed already made herself at home. Parked herself on the sofa, poking around in the fridge, checking out what we had in.

Over dinner, she barely let us get a word inrattling on about work, people she knew, and who was tight with money these days. She asked, ever so casually, what present her brother was getting her for New Years, then hinted shed rather just have cash.

I kept quiet. Quiet, while I was boiling inside.

All I could think about was how many times during the year shed borrowed money and never paid it back. Always with some story about family or a crisis.

Later that evening, she suggested we call more people over, because its dead boring with just us.

This is our home, and this is our celebration, I finally piped up.

Oh, so Im just extra, am I?

No, she wasnt extra.
But she certainly wasnt the lady of the house, either.

We argued. She locked herself in the room, all theatrical. My husband had a go at me for being too blunt.

Just before midnight, the three of us sat in awkward silence around the table. The fairy lights were twinkling, and the clock was ticking down. At midnight, my husband raised his glass.

I said softly but clearly:

To those who never ask, only take.

Silence.

I looked her straight in the eye for once and didnt look away.

You dont ask. You just show up, take, and useour home, our money, our time, our plans. And you expect thanks, too.

She got up. Her face had gone ghostly.

I see. So Im not wanted here.

You are, when you respect us. Not when you just help yourself.

A moment later, she wheeled out her suitcase. The door closed behind her.

My husband slumped into a chair, head in his hands.

Shes my sister

And Im your wife, I replied quietly. And Im done staying silent.

The next day, there were no texts, no apologies. Just silence.

It wasnt the New Year Id wanted.
But for the first time, I didnt let myself feel small.
I wasnt guilty.

Sometimes a holiday isnt about whos sitting round the table.
Its about finally telling the trutheven if it stings.
