I always had high hopes that Mum would retire soon, move out to the countryside, and leave her three-bedroom flat to me and my wife!

Let me tell you about my neighbour, Margaret. Shes 68 now. She used to live alone in her spacious three-bedroom flat. Just recently, she decided to let out her place and set off on an adventure.

Her daughter, Emily, came to me, clearly upset:
What is Mum playing at? Shes really let me down! Now my mother-in-law is having a go, saying Ill lose my mind when Im old too. Like mother, like daughter, she keeps saying. My husband and I just took out a car loan and we’ve fallen behind by two months. We were so counting on Mum to bail us out! I thought shed help us, but instead, shes rented her flat and gone travelling!

I stared at Emily, puzzledwhy should her mother pay off their car loan? But she carried on:
My mother-in-law is so angry that were living with her in her flat, and my mum’s let hers out to strangers!

I could tell Emily was hoping for a bit of sympathy from me. But honestly, I think Margarets done nothing wrong. She deserves to live however she pleases. Why do people assume that once a woman retires she ought to dedicate her life entirely to her children and grandchildren? I told Emily straight:

Why not rely on yourself and your husband? Why not build your own future? Youve been married 15 yearswhy havent you saved for your own home instead of waiting around for your mums? Then your mother-in-law wouldnt have a reason to complain.

Emily replied:
We really hoped that after Mum retired shed move to the country and wed have her three-bedroom flat all to ourselves!

Feeling a bit cheeky, I decided to tease Emily:
What if Margaret gets married herself? Remember Janeshe went on holiday in Spain, met someone, fell in love, and now shes happily settled there. You never know, maybe Margaret might do the same!

Emily looked at me, stunned. Id seen recent photos of Margaret onlineshe looked absolutely radiant. She wrote all about enjoying her travels, living life to the fullest. I was genuinely happy for her. She did exactly what felt right. Age shouldnt stop anyone from chasing joy or new adventures.

Reflecting on all this, I realised something important: happiness isnt about clinging to others or their belongings. Its about living your life on your own terms. I hope I remember that lesson myself.
