My Ex Wouldn’t Spend a Penny on Our Children, Yet I Saw Him Buying Expensive Trainers for His Stepch…

There I was, walking into the shopping centre with my two children, when I spotted himmy ex-husband. The very same man who hadnt given a penny towards our kids for months, always coming up with financial difficulties whenever Id ask for school shoes or supplies.

And yet, there he was, in the priciest shoe shop in town, treating his stepchildren to fancy trainers like he was a millionaire. The rage bubbled inside me, but rather than make a scene, I took a deep breath and thought, This wont stand.

I strolled over, holding my kids hands, just as he was absorbed in his phone while the children tried on ridiculously expensive Nikes. The shop assistant was tidying up the boxes.

Excuse me, Miss, I said, flashing my politest smile, Do you have these in sizes 1 and 3?

She looked a bit confused. Of course. For?

For my children, I replied, then, raising my voice a bit, added, My husband will pay for them all in one go, wont you, darling?

My ex looked up from his phone, thunderstruck, his eyes wide as saucers.

What? he spluttered, but I was already settling the kids down to try on the trainers.

Yes, hes footing the bill, I told the assistant calmly. Were a blended family, you see? Those are his stepchildren, and these are ours. He always insists on treating them the same, dont you, love?

My exs face was as red as a beetroot. He opened his mouth to protest, but the assistant was already bringing over boxes, and I winked at him.

They fit perfectly, Miss. Well take them.

Then, as the assistant recorded everything, I spotted a gorgeous pair of coral-coloured trainers on the shelftotally my style.

Oh, could I have those in a size 5 as well please? The coral ones.

For yourself? the assistant asked.

Yes, for me, I said, sliding them on. Oh, they feel amazing! And do you have those classy black ones too? I need them for work.

MORE? my ex managed to choke out.

Dont be stingy, darling, I replied sweetly. You know I need comfy shoes for my job. And the trainers are for the park with the kids. You know, Ive said I needed new ones for ages.

The poor assistant, clueless about the drama unfolding, just smiled and kept tallying.

Splendid, thats eight pairs altogether, she said, starting to work out the total.

I stood, gave my children a quick kiss, and walked over to my ex.

Alright, dear, Im offneed to finish my shopping. The kids will stay with you, alright? Just bring them home later.

Before he could react, I scooped up the bags with the trainers for MY kids and myself, and strolled confidently to the exit, feeling like royalty.

The last thing I heard was the assistants voice: Thatll be £500. Cash or card, sir?

It wasnt until I reached the car park that I let myself laugh aloud. His face had been priceless. I glanced at my new trainers in the bag and thought, Well, thats a bit of poetic justice.

That evening, he dropped the kids offof course, half an hour latewearing an expression somewhere between outrage and resignation. The stepchildren werent with him.

What you did was he began.

What? I interrupted innocently. Making sure YOUR kids got new trainers as well? Dont mention it, darling. Its the least you could do.

He fell silent, shook his head. Eight pairs EIGHT. And did you really need TWO yourself?

You never know when you need comfortable trainers, love. Besideshow many months of maintenance do you owe me? Consider this an advance.

Youre mad.

No, Im exhausted, I replied. Theres a difference. But now, at least, my feet are well supported.

He turned to leave, and as he got in his car, I heard him mutter, Eight pairs thisll cost me more than just paying maintenance

Exactly, genius, I thought as I closed the door.

The kids ran to hug me, delighted with their new trainers. I wore the coral ones that evening for a stroll and felt fantastic.

Was I wrong? Perhaps. Do I regret it? Not for a second. Sometimes, standing up for whats fair teaches others how to treat youand reminds you of your own worth.
