UNWANTED IN HER OWN HOME

Margaret has spent her entire life building this house with her husband, pouring her heart into every brick. When her son married Emily, she truly believed their home would soon echo with laughter and warmth. But just a couple of months later, the atmosphere in the house has turned heavy.

Emily begins a subtle campaign. First, she rearranges the furniture without consulting Margaret, then she throws out her old but cherished curtains. Margaret stays silentshe only wants her son to be happy. But Emily isnt satisfied. She craves to be the only lady of the house.

Mum, your televisions far too loud in your room; Ive got a headache, Emily complains during the day.
Mum, please dont come into the kitchen when Im cooking. You just get in my way, she insists in the evening.

To her husband, Emily whispers a different story: Your mother is really losing it, she nags constantly and picks on me. Its all too muchI cry all the time. Torn between the two most important women in his life, her son finds himself slowly taking his wifes side.

Everything comes to a head on a chilly evening. Margaret has fallen ill, running a high temperature. She heads to the kitchen to ask for a cup of tea, but overhears a conversation in the living room.

Thomas, Emily is saying, I cant do this any longer. Your mothers got the biggest room in the house. Why dont we move her out to the garden annex? Shed have her own peace and wed finally have more space. Or better yet what if she went to live with her sister in the countryside?

Thomas hesitates. But, Emily this is her house.

It was hers. Now its ours, Emily snaps. If she stays, Im going back to my parents. Your choice.

Margaret doesnt wait for her son to answer. She walks into the room, pale but with her head held high.

You wont need to choose, she says quietly. Emily, youre rightthe house should belong to family. But legally, this house is mine. And Im not moving out to the annex. Thomas, I love you dearly, but if you agree that your mother is no longer welcome in her own home, the door is open for the both of you. Pack your things.

Emily counted on her mother-in-laws weakness, but miscalculated. Seeing the tears in his mothers eyes and the cold ambition in his wifes, Thomas finally wakes up. That night, he stays. Emily leaves in tears, shouting theyll regret it.

A year has passed. Thomas lives with his mother and has met another woman, someone who values comfort and respects elders. And Margaret has learnt one vital lesson: kindness must not be defenceless. If you let someone into your home, be watchfulthey might just try to turn you out.
