I bought new clothes for my daughter-in-law so she could go out with another man and they called me a terrible mother. I could hardly believe it. My own family branded me a bad mother when they found out what Id done.

But let me tell the whole story before you pass judgement.

It all began a few months back, when I went to visit my son Henry and his wife Charlotte. I knocked on their door and heard a faint sobbing.

When Charlotte opened up, her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and she was cradling my grandsonlittle Oliver. He looked so thin it broke my heart.

Mum Im glad youre here, she said, her voice trembling.

Whats happened, love? Why are you crying? I asked as I stepped inside.

And thats when everything came out.

My own sonthe foolish man I raisedhadn’t been giving her money for groceries. Claimed there wasnt enough. Yet every weekend, hed go out drinking with his mates at pubs and clubs, and I later discovered, with other women.

Charlotte what do you eat? I asked, horrified.

I bake cakes and biscuits and sell them to the neighbours, Mum she replied, tears streaming down her face.

But Henry doesnt want me working elsewhere. Says I should stay home with Oliver.

I felt such disappointment that it made my knees weak.

Is this how I brought up my son?

A man who lets his own family starve?

Pack your things. And Olivers too. You’re coming to live with me, I said without hesitation.

But Mum what about your son?

Henrys useless.

Youre my daughter-in-law.

And Oliver is my grandson.

End of story.

I took them into my home that very day.

Henry made an awful scene.

My family said Id lost my mind.

That I shouldnt interfere.

That these are marital problems.

Problems between husband and wife?

I hired the best solicitor I could find.

Spent my savings.

But it was worth it.

Now that layabout is legally required to pay child support.

And if he doesnt, therell be serious trouble with the law.

Charlotte blossomed in my care.

She started smiling again.

My grandson is chubby and healthy now.

Charlotte found a job in an office.

Shes always been bright, hardworking, and lovelyHenry had simply crushed her until shed forgotten that herself.

And heres the part where they call me a bad mother.

Last week, I went to the shopping centre and bought her three beautiful outfits:

One was a blue dress that fit her perfectly.

An elegant pair of trousers and a white blouse.

And a more casual but very stylish ensemble.

Mum what are these for? she asked, rather puzzled.

Do you remember Williammy friend Margarets son? The engineer.

I spoke to him about you, and hed like to buy you a coffee.

Mum! But Im still married to your son

Only on paper, my love.

That marriage ended long ago.

You have every right to start again.

Williams a good manIve known him since he was a lad.

Hes got a decent job and great manners

And when I showed him your photo, he said you were truly lovely.

Charlotte blushed.

But I saw something in her eyes I hadnt seen for months.

A spark of hope.

I dont know, Mum What will people say?

People?

Let them talk.

The same people who stayed quiet while Henry let you go hungry.

Go out for coffee, Charlotte.

Wear your new clothes.

Smile.

Meet someone new.

You deserve it.

When Henry found out, he rang me in a fury.

How dare I do this to his wife?

I hung up on him.

My sister told me I was wrecking a marriage.

My brother-in-law said it wasnt my place to meddle.

But I saw something different.

I saw Charlotte come back from that coffee date beaming.

I saw William collect her for the cinema the next week.

I watched little Oliver laugh when William brought him a teddy bear.

And I saw my son crying and pleading, promising to change, when he realised hed truly lost her.

You know what?

I regret nothing.

Yes, I am his mother.

But above all else, I am a woman.

No woman deserves what Charlotte went through at my sons hands.

So I ask you:

Am I a bad mother because I helped my daughter-in-law find happiness again?

Sometimes, to act rightly, you cannot listen to othersonly your heart.
