Victoria Had Made All the Preparations for the Harvest and Headed Eagerly Into the Village, Only to Be Stunned Upon Discovering the Entire Crop Had Already Been Gathered

Two years ago, my grandmother Margaret passed away, leaving me her cottage in a small English village, complete with a spacious garden and a vegetable patch. I have such fond memories of my childhood spent thereplaying amongst the apple trees, picking blackcurrants, and helping Gran with the endless chores. Every weekend, my family and I, along with my mother-in-law, would visit to enjoy the fresh countryside air and the spoils of the garden. Things were always peaceful between me and my mother-in-lawno arguments, no awkward silences.

As harvest season approached, I had made sure I was well-prepared with jars, sugar, and everything else needed to make jams, compotes, and chutneys. But when I arrived at the cottage this year, I was horrified to find every last currant and raspberry gone. The bushes were utterly bare. Some neighbours mentioned that a few lads from the village may have snuck in to pick the berries, but that didnt add upthe sheer quantity missing would have taken them the best part of a day to strip everything.

Suddenly, my aunt, who lives next door, rushed over to tell me that my mother-in-law had turned up the previous day and left with two large buckets brimming with berries. I was both furious and bewildered.

I confronted my mother-in-law, and she admitted, without a hint of remorse, that shed picked every last berry. She calmly said she wanted the grandchildren to have something healthy and that she couldnt afford to buy fruit at the local greengrocers prices. I could barely believe what I was hearing. I told her exactly how upset I was, realising Id now have to buy everything at full price just to stock up for winter.

When I got home, I told my husband what had happened. He, too, was dumbfounded by his mothers actions. That was when I resolved to take charge: I took back the cottage keys from her. Since then, she only visits the cottage with us, making sure there are no more berry raids behind my back.
