After Five Years of Marriage, My Brother’s Wife Remained a Stranger to Our Family—Until a Recent Visit Changed Everything

After five years of my brothers marriage, his wife was still a stranger to us, right up to a recent visit that finally lifted the veil. My brother, Edward, moved to Manchester after finishing university, hoping it was only for a year before coming home to London, but fate intervened. He met someone, they quickly decided to marry, and he ended up staying up north for good. Due to various circumstances, I couldnt attend the wedding only my mother managed a brief meeting with his bride at the time.

Time slipped by, and we never managed to visit them. But this year, Edward mentioned their holiday, which involved several stops and included a two-day stay at ours. I was genuinely eager and made sure everything was perfectly arranged for their arrival in our cosy little flat, or if they preferred, my aunts quaint cottage nearby. My hopefulness turned to disappointment rather swiftly after meeting my sister-in-law, Charlotte, at Heathrow. From the get-go, she complained relentlessly about the flight, seeming dissatisfied with every little detail.

Her disapproval carried on when we reached the cottage, where she took a clear dislike to the shower and the loo, going on about them in a rather unreasonable way. Her constant grumbling ended with Edward taking her off to the city centre, leaving my husband and I confused about her behaviour. When they returned, she was fussy about food, rejecting nearly every meal I prepared with care. She seemed interested only in vegetables, eyeing even those with suspicion.

As if that werent enough, while wandering around town the following day, Charlotte displayed a restless sort of petulance, acting like a spoilt child. By then I was honestly counting down the minutes until I could wave them off at the airport. I couldnt fathom how my brother managed to live with her for five years; her real character emerged within just two days spent under our roof.
