William Left Anna and the Children for Another Woman—But After Anna Overcame a Long Depression, Something Unexpected Happened

Anna didnt come home from work empty-handed. She enjoyed popping into the corner shop, picking up a small bottle of wine to enjoy with her supper. That particular evening, Anna arrived home to find a peculiar scene: her common-law husband, William, was packing his bags.

Have you found a job? Are you heading out for a shift? she asked, her voice uncertain.
No, Im leaving.
Where are you going? Its ten oclock at night!
Are you deaf? I said Im leaving. Im done. Youre useless.

Annas legs buckled beneath her, and she dropped wearily onto a chair. Are you alright? William asked, though his tone was anything but caring.

They had two young children together. Anna pressed on, her voice shaking, Are you ill, William? I bore your children. I took you off the streets when you were working in that grimy car wash. I cleaned you up, I fed you, I helped you become decent. All the while, I worked and kept food on the table. Is this how you show your gratitude?
He turned away, throwing shirts into a bag. Ill never abandon the kids, but you… Ive had enough. You come home every night stinking of wine, pretending its to help your appetite. Rebecca isnt like that. She smells sweet and lovely, not of stale alcohol.
So youre off to see Rebecca? Do you even know who she really is? She ran away from some town and ended up herewho knows what shes running from? Youre daft if you think this will end well.

William ignored Annas words. He slammed the front door behind him as he left, the sound tolling like the start of a storm. The shock sent Anna spiralling. She began drinking even more heavily. She turned up to work at the dressmakers with a pounding headache and unsteady hands, unable to sew a stitch properly. The weeks dragged by in a lonely fog. Anna found herself drinking late into every night, sometimes forgetting to cook for the children, who got their main meals at nursery.

She neglected the house; the air hung with the stench of stale smoke, mould crept into pots and pans, and the children ran around in grubby clothes. It wasnt long before a social worker, prompted by the buildings caretaker, came to remove Annas children. They told her she had one last shot to set things right. She still had a job and a flatand that should be enough, if she could get herself back on track.

Anna took some leave, curling up on her bed for several days, barely able to move. But in the end, her determination won outshe refused to touch another bottle. On the fifth day, as her appetite slowly returned and she felt settled without any alcohol, Anna began scrubbing the flat from top to bottom before hurrying back to work.

Anna threw herself into her sewing, working late, and in an effort to keep her mind off drink, she focused on cleaning and organising at home.

Months passed. Eventually, her children were returned to her, though social workers continued to check in regularly. Anna held strongher children were her priority now, and she never reached for another bottle. Even when she learned that William had proposed to Rebecca, Anna stood firm. The pain gnawed at hershe had carried Williams children, shared eight years of her life with him, but there would be no reconciliation.

A few months later, William turned up at her door, sporting a nasty black eye.
Anna, Im sorry… Turns out Rebecca ran away from her husband, who tracked her down and gave me a beating, then dragged her off by her hair.

Anna looked at him with clear eyes. William, thank you for our childrenand for the lesson you taught me. But I wont take you back. Please, let me be.

Sometimes, losing everything is the very thing that helps you find your own strength. Anna learned that self-respect can only be built from within, and that putting your children above all is the truest way forward.
