How Emily Became a Mother Thanks to Her Kind Heart

Emily steps into the entrance hallway of her London flat and notices a cardboard box by her front door. She stares in surprise. Inside, curled up together, are a small dog and a cat. Both look up at Emily, wide-eyed and trembling with fear.

Whats all this then? Who are you? Emily mutters, as if the pair might answer her.

Just then, Mrs. Smith from the neighbouring flat pokes her head out.

Oh, evening, Emily dear! Can you believe it? Poor Valerie from upstairs has passed on, and her niece never did find a home for her pets.

She asked everyone she could think ofno one would take them. My own cat wont have any other animals near him, and some of the neighbours have allergies. Perhaps you and David might? Youre a young couple, doing well, no children just yet Mrs. Smith suggests hopefully.

We hadnt thought about getting pets, let alone two at once Emily replies, unsure.

They shouldnt be separated, really. Theyre so used to each otheralways slept together. Valerie would walk the dog herself; the cat took care of himself outside. Theyre used to flat life, shouldnt be much bother.

Would you consider it? Mrs. Smith pleads, a hint of desperation in her voice.

What happens if we dont? Emily asks.

They were talking about taking them to be put down. Its dreadful, but the flats nearly sold and the new owners dont want them Thats the box, ready and all, in case no one steps in. Mrs. Smith sighs.

Just then, a man enters the hallway and glances at Emily. He nods at the box and adds, Would you consider taking them in? Theyre quiet, dont eat much. Theyre both getting on a bit. Likely havent got long left. Its such a shame. Valerie really loved them.

Emily sighs. Alright, bring them in. I cant stand the thought of them well, you know. What are their names? We havent been here long, only a couple of years, so we barely met anyone yet

He beams, relieved, and picks up the box, bringing it inside.

The dogs Jack, and the cats Oliver. Thank you. Really, thank you. Here he places a ten-pound note and a lead on the sideboard, for now, just to get you started. Thanks again.

Emily shuts the door and hangs her coat up. She kneels, gently speaking to her unexpected guests.

Well, lads? Davids going to be surprised, all right. I hope he doesnt chuck us all out. Still, hes a softie; I think hell come round Dont worry, no ones going to hurt you now, Emily soothes.

The cat seems to sense her words and gingerly climbs out, beginning an exploration of the flat. Jack, the dog, stays in the box a moment longer, just watching his new owner and his furry friend with wary eyes.

Emily heads to the kitchen and opens the fridgeof course, nothing for pets in sight. She boils up some porridge, adds bits of chicken and decides theyll have to make do with that tonight.

To her relief, the cat, after inspecting the flat, pads into the kitchen and shows an interest in the makeshift meal Emily plates up. She calls Jack in too.

It takes a while, but when Jack sees Oliver tucking in, he edges closer and gazes at Emily mournfully.

David, Emilys husband, returns from work. Hes baffled but listens as Emily explains. The pair agree theyll try to find a bigger home for the petssomeone with a garden might be betterbut for now, theyre theirs.

Emily and David have been married four years and only bought the flat two years ago. They love each other and are happy, but the absence of children casts a slight shadow.

You always said you liked things spotless, didnt want animals David says, bewildered.

I just thought wed have a baby, Emily says quietly. Butwhen I heard they were for the needle I couldnt say no. I hope youre not angry Her eyes fill with tears.

Hey, I love animals too. Well manage. Tomorrow Ill ask round at work, see if anyones got space. He enfolds her in a hug.

From that day, life in the flat changes. Jack and Oliver soon get used to it; after all, their previous flat was just upstairs with the same layout and garden.

Well done, you two, Emily tells them. Youd think youd always been here

She walks Jack three times a day and lets Oliver come and go through the open window, just as he likes.

Mrs. Smith is delighted Emily took them in and brings treats from her Sunday roast for Jack, and leftovers for Oliver.

Evenings are cheerfulDavid and Emily laugh to see the cat dashing about with new toys and the dog snoring contentedly in his new bed.

The two animals always sleep together. The couple realise theyd cause real heartbreak if they were separated, so they abandon the idea of rehoming them altogether after a few months. Theyve grown far too attached.

Emilys mother comes to visit most weekends; she lives in a nearby neighbourhood. Though initially taken aback, she, too, falls for the animals.

Id have the cat, but I live on the top floor. Hes used to the garden she muses.

But Emily refuses, No, Mum. Youll look after them for us when we need a holiday. Thatll be a big helpwater the plants and keep an eye on our furry lot.

Summer arrives, and the couple go for a week to the seaside. Emily phones her mum almost every day, anxious both for her and the pets.

Alls well. Theyre a treat, eating, sleeping together, out in the courtyard daily. Enjoy yourselves! her mum reports cheerily.

When they return, Emily is touched by the enthusiastic greeting from Jack and Oliver. The dog wags his tail, jumps, and whimpers; the cat, after the excitement, rubs blissfully against Davids legs, purring loudly.

Look at that! The four-legged ones love us, too, David beams. Emily strokes Jack and immediately puts food on for everyone.

She soon finds herself getting up earlier, to fit in a walk with Jack and feed her furry friends before work.

Then, a couple of months later, Emily nervously tells David the good news: shes finally pregnant. Its the happiest moment for them both.

Emilys mother says, Its no accident Jack and Oliver came to you. A little test from above, to see how kind your heart is. The universes giftyoure to be a mother now. Best start preparing, love.

You know, I agree, Mum. Even if I dont believe in signs! Still, these two have been my best preparation for motherhoodcleaning, feeding, worrying, loving theyre just like having kids!

Her mother offers, Shall I have them for a while when the little one comes, make things easier?

No, Mum! Well manage. Really. You come round and help with the buggy walks, or babysit if we need it. Thatll be perfect.

They hug.

Emilys pregnancy goes well, and in due course, she gives birth to a son. David is over the moon, followed by the whole family.

Jack, mellow with age, never barks or makes a fuss. Oliver causes no trouble either, spending warm days out in the garden or climbing the old lime tree, always returning for cuddles. The home is full, and all the more joyful for it.

The older neighboursthanks to Mrs. Smithnow tell all along the street the happy story of how Emily became a mother through the goodness of her heart.

She makes it sound like a proper legend, proof that kindness does not go unnoticed by the universe
