A Shocking Tale for the Village: Eva’s Brother Became Her Husband

Published

on

For our small English village, it was utterly astonishing news: Eves brother had become her husband. The neighbours were hesitant even to greet them in passing. They joined their cottages together, fencing them off as one, and worked side by side in the vegetable patch, tending to their smallholding. But when Eve started attending the village church, her life changed forever. Some peoples paths are bright and easy, while others are set upon rocky, winding roadsyou can never tell what fate has in store.

Eve couldnt remember her own mother; she had died during childbirth, leaving her father, John, alone with a tiny daughter and no family nearby. Some advised John to send the baby to an orphanage, but he refused even to consider it: Eve was his only family, his little star and pride.

Each day, their neighbour, Mary, a widow bringing up her thirteen-year-old son, looked in on them. She would bring supper, bathe little Eve, feed her, and cradle her when she cried. It was while gazing up into Marys blue eyes that Eve spoke her first word: Mummy.

Mary faltered, feeling a strange warmth course through her. Johns eyes brimmed with tears. Do you hear, Mary? Shes called you mother. Be her mother, then, he said, gazing warmly for her reply. Lets talk later. Supper first, Mary said, blushing deeply.

Mary was ten years older than John, but that wasnt her only worry. She didnt know how her son, Stephen, would react. Yet Stephen was wise beyond his years. Weve been a family for a long time anyway, havent we, Mum? he said.

They joined their homes, fenced them in, tending the garden and smallholding together, and raised the children with love and respect. Marys eyes sparkled with happiness, her age forgotten in contentment. But their peaceful joys were all too brief. One day, as John was brushing their horses thick mane at the stable, disaster befell him. He was caught off guard and struck by a sudden kick. Pain shot through him and he collapsed, crying out. Mary rushed from the house to find him writhing in agony, and called the ambulance at once. For three days the doctors fought for his life, but in the end, John could not be saved.

Not quite forty, Mary became a widow a second time. Stephen enrolled in technical college to become a builder, and was able to stay in student lodging with meals providedimportant relief, as Mary now only had Eve to care for.

Stephen would buy Eve little gifts from his grant money, and Eve would always rush out to greet him on the drive the moment he arrived. Once, Stephen brought her a doll, and as Eve perched on his knee she whispered, Thank you, Daddy. Something in Mary broke when she saw Stephens embarrassment. Dont worry, she said. Eve was looking at her fathers photo album earlier, asking where her dad was. I told her hed gone far away. She must see something of him in you. Shell forget in time

But Eve continued to call Stephen “Dad,” and everyone grew used to it.

After college, Stephen served in the army before returning home a confident young man. Mary expected him to bring home a bride, but the years went by and Stephen showed no interest in the local girls, never going to the dances. He laboured at home instead, always fixing or renovating something. Im working for Eves sakeshell be a beauty. Soon, therell be suitors at our door, hed laugh.

One autumn afternoon, as Mary was digging up potatoes, she suddenly fainted. She blamed exhaustion, but the next day she couldnt get out of bed. She was dizzy, sick, and weak in the legs. Stephen took her to the county clinic. The diagnosis was shattering: Mary had a brain tumour. Stephens world stopped. What was he to do? Id recommend you bring your mother home so she can spend her last days surrounded by her loved ones, the weary doctor said.

Mary faded before Stephens eyes. Day and night, Eve stayed by Marys side, her eyes red from crying, unable to imagine life without her gentle mother.

Before she died, Mary asked for a private word with Stephen. Promise me, son, youll never leave Eve. You know youre not related by blood. No one will ever care for her like you, and youlike her. Her voice barely made a whisper. After the funeral, Stephen remembered her words more and more, wondering at their meaning, until at last it was clearMary had wanted him to marry Eve. But how? Hed been as a brother, then a father. Now, to be her husband? It felt impossible. He couldnt obey his mothers final wish.

Stephen moved into his own place, arranging things to his own taste. Eve was hurt by his distance, not understanding what wrong shed done. She missed his voice, his laughter, their companionable talks. She was stunned the day she came home to find he had put up a fence, shutting her out.

One day, the farm manager where Eve worked as an accountant gave her a bonus. She bought champagne and a cake and knocked on Stephens door, beaming, radiant. Shall we celebrate my first bonus, Stephen? she asked, cheeks flushed and heart pounding.

Stephen stared, entranced, unable to speak. He realised then that he was in love with Eveperhaps his mother had sensed it before she died?

The silence grew tense until Eve spoke, haltingly, with long pauses. She said she knew perhaps it was all wrong, shameful even, but she loved him, and she needed no one but him.

On Sunday, Eve went to confession. The village vicar listened carefully, and gave them his blessingthey were not related by blood, after all.

And so, Stephenwhom Eve had once called brother and fatherbecame her husband. Thirty years passed. Together, they raised two sons and delighted in four granddaughters. People talked, of course, but Stephen and Eve believed that if there is love in your heart, you must be patient and rise above gossip, and cherish your feelings so they never fade with time.

And now, Stephen and Eve know for certain: it is Gods will that a mothers heart never fails, always blessing her child with happiness.
