After Telling Her Boyfriend She Was Expecting, Anna Saw Everything Written on Paul’s Face—He Clearly Wasn’t Prepared for a Baby, Nor Did He Want to Get Married So Soon…
When she told her beloved that she was expecting a baby, Hannah could read everything on Pauls face. It was clear that he hadnt counted on having a child just yet and hardly wanted to get married so young
Hannie fell in love before she even turned eighteen. She had liked the boy from her village for a long time, and that spring they spent every day together, wandering through the countryside, strolling by the river, and watching the sun set behind the fields.
She was planning to start at the local college in the city. But one day, Hannah realised she was pregnant. She didnt know what to do.
What will Mum say? Or my sister? Or the neighbours?
She was at a loss
Hannah made a firm decisionshe wouldn’t go through with the pregnancy. She told her mother everything, then left for London in tears. Her mother didnt try to stop her
Hannahs mother was struggling already, raising her younger daughter alone, and now her eldest brought such a gift just as things were hard enough
Everything went smoothly in the city. After that, Hannah cut off all contact with Paul. Not that he was begging her to stay in touch
Bitter disappointment and a sense of emptiness settled into Hannahs heart. She found it impossible to study, with her mother still angry and unable to help.
She needed to find work and somewhere to live if she was to survive in the city. Hannah had no intention of going back to Gloucestershire: people would only whisper about her.
Perhaps fate had a hand in leading her past a noticeboard with job adverts pinned to it. Neatly written in blue ink, one of the notes read: Wanted: Nanny for a three-year-old boy. Live-in, all meals included. Just what she needed!
Hannah was taken on by a pair of university lecturers. The little boy, Rorytheir cherished only childsoon grew so fond of her that he asked after her every time she went away for a short visit back home.
The years passed, and Hannah settled naturally into their city household. John and Catherine, both respected at the university, let Hannah gradually take on more dutieswashing, ironing, keeping the flat clean, helping Rory with his homework, shopping for groceries, and cooking delicious meals.
As Rory grew older and didnt need a nanny any longer, John and Catherine simply kept Hannah on to help run the home.
It wasnt a huge salary, but with room and board, it suited Hannah just fine. She found peace, shelter, and genuine kindness from the couple.
But something else troubled her. A few months ago, shed met George, a young man from the next street over. Their occasional evening walks soon blossomed into something serious.
They grew close. After nearly three years together, Hannah faced the fact that she could never have children.
She decided not to keep it a secret from George. Once again, though, she was left. Once more, her heart ached with the sting of loneliness.
Work in John and Catherines household became her only refuge. She cared for them as if they were her own family.
In truth, she became part of their family. After her second failed romance, Hannahs heart found a measure of peace. She gave up hoping that she would ever marry.
Several calm years went by. Rory completed university, spoke excellent French, and had wonderful job offers coming in. He took a position abroad.
Not long after, Catherines health started to fail. Hannah cared for her lovingly, while John worked endlessly to support the household and Rory.
But it couldnt last. In her final moments, Catherine whispered to Hannah,
Dont leave Johnnot nowplease
After Catherine was gone, the flat felt lonely and sombre. John spoke little, staring into his dinner most evenings.
Hannah felt out of place, more alone than ever. She knew she had to make a change: find another job despite having no qualifications, or return home, though things werent much better there.
One night after supper, Hannah stood quietly in front of John.
I think its time for me to leave, Mr. Smith. You dont really need me any more. Its time I moved on. Thank you for everything.
John seemed to awake from a dream. He looked up, startled, at Hannah.
What? Where would you go? Why? You want to leave me too? Just like that. Leave me alone?
Hannah sighed gently. John stood up and walked over to her, took her hand, and for the first time, kissed it softly.
You know, Hannah, John said, youve never really been a servant to us; youre a true member of this family. Im not letting you godo you hear?
She nodded, deeply moved.
And besides, he added, Catherine made me promise youd stay. After all these years, wed be lost without you. Please, Hannahstay with me. Lets keep things as they are. You look after me, and Ill look after you.
They stood in the kitchen by the window, holding each other in tears, feeling a weight lift from their hearts.
Peaceful, quiet days followed. Hannah waited for John to come home from work, kept the flat spotless, and sometimes Rory would call from Geneva, promising to visit soon
A year, then two, passed. As Hannahs birthday approached, John told her how much she meant to him, that he wanted to marry her.
They werent truly husband and wife, but he wanted to make it legal, to care for Hannah as she deserved. She was younger than him, and he knew one day hed need looking after too.
Grateful for his proposal, Hannah decided to wait until Rory came back, and when he did, John spoke to him. Rory agreedhe loved Hannah almost as his own mother. By then, Rory had a good job and a flat in Paris, and was married.
So at last, Hannah became a wife. She and John loved each other as dearly as any couple.
She still addressed her husband politelyJohn Edwardwhile he always called her lovingly, Hannie. Hannah had never known such happiness.
Every day she prayed for her husbands health, wishing for many more years together.
No one would guess, watching the elderly couple strolling through the park, what a lifetime bound them, or just how true and deep their feelings ran.
