John has just fried some potatoes and opened a jar of pickled gherkins. Today marks a year since his beloved Helen passed away. Suddenly, theres a knock at the door. So its you, he smiles warmly, seeing his neighbour Vera on the doorstep, and invites her to join him at the table. They sit together in quiet remembrance, sharing memories of Helen. Then, unexpectedly, John pulls out an envelope from his pocket.

Vera, Helen gave me this envelope before she left us, John explains, handing it over.

But this was meant for you, Vera says, surprised.

Just read it. Youll understand, John replies softly.

Vera opens the envelope, reading the note inside, and gasps.

Veras son-in-law has promised to pick her up from the cottage on Saturday morning. Shes sad to leave, but its late October now. The waters been turned off; its time to head home.

Vera! Mrs. Wilson, are you there? her neighbour Mr. Johnson calls, knocking on the door.

Come on in, John, Im still here. Packing up my thingsmy son-in-law says hell come for me the day after tomorrow. Hell probably tell me off again for collecting too many bags. But what can you do? I hardly have anythingmost of it is the harvest. Ive dried apples, this was a bumper apple year. Pickles, chutney, jamcant just leave it all. I did it all for them really. I dont need much for myself.

Youre telling me, Vera. Im heading back home too, but Ill stay here for a bit longer. Its lovely, this autumn. Helen always loved this time of year. Actually, the reason I popped rounddo you remember how wed always end the season together? Back when your husband, Mike, was with us, and we were all so young. The kids were little. The gardens were so neat thennow its just bramble everywhere. Even the apple trees seemed like theyd never grow up. Anyway, what I wanted to say, Veratoday marks a year since Helen passed. I thought we could remember her together. John fiddles nervously with an envelope. Id rather not sit alone. If you fancy coming over, Ive got some spuds on. We can spend some time together, and theres something else I wanted to talk to you about. Have you got time?

Of course, John. Here, take some of my pickled cucumbers. Ill be over in half an hour once Ive put everything away.

Their families have been friends for yearsbuilding their homes side by side, planting gardens together, always lending a hand. Every summer, theyd celebrate birthdays togetherthe sunshine months are a sort of small, happy life of their own. Now Veras grandchildren stay the whole summer, so shes always busy. Mike, her husband, has been gone for seven years, but John and Helen stayed close neighbours and friendsuntil Helen passed last autumn. Shed been so proud, having lost those extra pounds and looking like a model. But then, life changed. This summer felt odd. John seemed lost, obsessively digging in the garden, though Helen wasnt there to plant anything. You could hear him busying himself in the shed, frustrated when things went wrong. Vera didnt have the grandchildren as muchone week they were at camp, the next at the seaside. She didnt know who she kept planting things for. Still, she watered, weeded, kept herself occupied.

Vera sighs. What can you say? She changes into something clean and heads across to Johns house, as promised.

Hes waiting for her. The table is laidcrispy fried potatoes, tomatoes, and Veras pickled cucumbers freshly opened.

Take a seat, Vera. My children are coming round tomorrow, but tonight, lets remember Helen together. LookI found some old photos. Heres Mike planting a cherry tree with you. And all of us back from mushroom-picking in the woods, baskets brimming. Barbecue evenings toosee the campfire, Helen squinting at the smoke. John pours them both a little tipple. Lets raise a glass. To Helen, and to your Mike.

They fall silent, crunching on pickles. Then John takes out the envelope.

Vera, dont be startled, but hear me out. Last autumn, Helen faded before my eyes. We went back from the cottage in August, and she tried so hard to stay strong, didnt give in to sorrow. We spent our days reminiscing about our whole life together, watching all our favourite old films, talking about everything. Then, out of the blue, she says to me, John, promise me youll do what I ask. It isnt just a wish, its my final request. You mustnt refusewe both know why.

And then she hands me this envelope, insisting I read it in my own time. Here, have a look, and John passes the letter to Vera.

But this is yours

Just read it. Youll see.

Vera opens the envelope and finds a note in Helens handwriting:

John, my love, what can we do? Im leaving before my time. But life must go on. Please promise me youll live happily, for both of us. That doesn’t mean you need to forget me. Its justI cant bear the thought of you being unhappy, not when Ill be watching from above. Never be afraid to chase happiness, we both loved life too much for that. I want you to have someone by your side. And if you meet someone, know that Id be glad, not angry. In fact, I always thought Vera would be perfect for youI could see you liked her, and shes wonderful, shed understand. Ask her to live with you; I think it would be best for everyone. We never gave up, not once. Please, John, live happily, no matter what. Your Helen.

Vera reads once, then again, and looks up at John.

I promised Id do as she wished, just as Helen asked, John says nervously. Ill tell you, and its up to you, Vera. Lets try. Weve a friendship full of warmth. Theres nothing to be ashamed of. To live and cherish every day is a blessing; despair is a sin. Will you be my wife, Vera? I promise, you wont regret it.

Vera is lost for words at first. Its so unexpected. She looks at John, then decides theres truth in his words.

All right, John. Let me think on it. Ill tell my son-in-law Im not ready, that I need another week.

Thats what they agree, and John walks her back to her door.

That night, Vera can barely sleep. Its a weighty decisionher whole life playing before her eyes. Towards dawn, she dreams of Mike, standing and laughing, What are you thinking about, Vera? Lifes easier together. Marry John, and thats that. Im not upset, not at allIm happy you wont be alone.

The following summer, Vera and John take down the fence between their gardens. With grandchildren coming from both families, the garden is alive with the sound of children playing. John builds a swing set; Vera plants every vegetable imaginable. Theres enough for the whole big family. The granddaughters help, with their own little patches to care for. Their grown-up children visit at weekends, pleased their parents have each other for company and support.

Maybe some passersby will judge. But Helen and Mike, watching from above, are smiling. The promise to be happy has been honoured. And so, against all odds, life carries on.
