A Friend Doesn’t Celebrate New Year’s Eve—And I Understand Why. Here’s What I Tell Her.

So, my friend Emily hasnt celebrated New Years Eve for the last five years. She never bothers to buy a Christmas tree, skips decorating her flat, and doesnt hang up any fairy lights. Emily doesnt stress about cooking a big meal for the holiday or buying presents for her rather long list of family and friends. Whenever people find out, theyre honestly gobsmacked by her attitude. But Emilys not depressed or anything like thatshes got a family, good mates, everything. She just made a decision a few years ago not to celebrate New Year anymore, and shes held to it ever since. For her, the 31st of December is just another date on the calendar. She doesnt try to argue her case to anyone, and she has no plans to change her mind.

In the beginning, Emily worried shed end up all alone on New Years Eve. She wasnt seeing anyone, her parents were away that night, and her friends were off to raucous group parties. So, there she was: home by herself. But surprise, surpriseabsolutely nothing dreadful happened. She rang all her loved ones in advance to wish them well, cooked herself a nice dinner, and treated herself to a long soak in a hot bath. That old saying about how the way you spend New Years Eve sets the tone for the next yearwell, that really hit home for Emily that night. She realised she didnt waste her energy stressing over food or cleaning up, wasnt rushing anywhere, didnt feel frazzled, and in the end, managed to have a proper relaxing eveningwithout mates or booze.

And after the holiday, Emily found another huge plus to her new approachit didnt cost her a penny. No Christmas tree, no baubles, no special food or fancy decorationsnone of it. And honestly, all those bits add up! But if theres no proper celebration, theres simply nowhere for your money to go. Saves your budget quite a bit, no doubt.

You save a fair bit of time, too. No slaving away in the kitchen or turning the flat upside down for a deep clean. No hours spent doing your hair or finding the perfect outfit. So often, the host doesnt even get to sit down until nearly midnight, halfway asleep from exhaustion, not thinking about whats ahead for the new year at all.

Emilys also ditched the whole present-buying rigmarole. No more elbowing through jam-packed shops or blowing her entire paycheque on gifts for tons of relatives and friends. Honestly, when you add up all the money spent on presents for one big festive get-together, sometimes it would be cheaper to just pack up and jet somewhere warm for the holidays! And truly, you can make any day special if you fancy, and at the end of the year, youre free to look back and plan for whats aheadwithout all the chaos.

Thing is, Emily makes a lot of good points, and most people who actually stop to listen end up seeing where shes coming from. Sadly, most just jump to conclusions or start digging for some hidden reasonlike maybe shes strapped for cash and cant afford to go all out.

Emily honestly couldnt care less about the critics. She says maybe when she has kids, shell happily do it alltree, tinsel, pressies. But for herself, shes fine sticking with what feels right. After all, saying goodbye to the old year and ringing in the new is something you can do in your own way, whenever and however you like. If youre in the mood, any day can feel like a celebration.

As for me, our lot always goes all out for New Years with a big gathering, and I do love getting everything ready. But I completely get Emilys side of things. If I ended up alone that day, I dont reckon Id cry into my pillowmuch more likely, Id just enjoy the peace and quiet, take it easy, and really chill out for once.
