A Friend Invited Guests to Our Cottage for Her Birthday Without Asking—After Years of Sharing Our Ho…

Six years ago, my husband and I bought a charming little cottage in the Cotswolds. Every corner of it bears the mark of our hard workwe painted the walls, replanted the borders, and spent countless weekends tending to our own patch of countryside. If we couldn’t get away every weekend, we made sure to make the trip at least every other.

We never bothered with a full-on allotment, just a modest bed with some cucumbers, tomatoes, a few herbs, onions, courgettes, and peppersa bit of everything, just enough for two people to enjoy. The cottage came with wild raspberry bushes, clusters of blackcurrant, and some ancient gooseberry shrubs already flourishing in the garden. There was even a generous stretch of strawberry plants. Often, I’d pack up boxes of these fruits to bring into the office, sharing them with my colleagues, who were always delighted.

Earlier this year, a woman named Emily transferred to our team from another department. She seemed perfectly pleasantgracious, well-mannered, always ready with a smile. One time, Id brought in a punnet of strawberries, and of course, I offered her some. She ate them and couldnt stop praising their sweet, homegrown flavour, asking where I got them and what the cottage was like. I was happy to tell her about it, feeling a swell of pride.

But just a few days later, Emily found me at my desk, asking if I could lend her the keys to our cottageher daughter, she said, wanted to take the grandchildren for the school holidays, let them breathe a bit of country air. Apparently we wouldn’t be using it that week anyway, and her daughter was off on maternity leave, desperate for a break from Londons bustle.

Naturally, I said no. Emily seemed quietly offended but didnt push the matter.

A fortnight passed. Then one afternoon, another woman from Emilys department, Sarah, wandered over and asked me how to get to our cottage. Surprised, I asked why she needed to know. She explained that Emily had invited herand other colleaguesto a birthday celebration at our cottage, telling them all to make their own way there.

I was gobsmacked.

I confronted Emily straight away, my heart pounding. What on earth do you think youre doing? I demanded.

She looked at me with an air of innocence, a slight smile on her lips. Whats the harm? she said. Its just for my birthday. No ones staying overnight, its only for a day. Surely you dont mind?

Well, I did mind. I minded, deeply. This was the place my husband and I had poured our energy intomy sanctuary, my hard work. I could just picture a crowd of people trampling on the lawn, crushing the lupins, picking the raspberries, cluttering up our little kitchen without a care.

Worse, she hadnt even had the courtesy to invite melet alone ask for my permission.

So I refused. She was miffed, but so be it. I didnt care. Id been generous for years, sharing my fruit with everyone in the office. But never had anyone been so downright cheeky as Emily.
