A Love Story for the Ages: A Marriage Born of True Friendship

**Diary Entry: A Tale of Love and a Little Helper**

One fine day, my friend decided to marryfor love, of course. His bride, Emily, was lovely, sharp-witted, and fiercely independent. She worked as an accountant at a top firm in London and earned a handsome salary.

My friend, James, didnt want to fall short either. He took on extra shifts and worked tirelessly to pay off their flats mortgage sooner. Theyd pooled their savings, taken out a loan, and even had family chip in. The place was renovated in a sleek, modern style, tastefully decoratedthe perfect setting for a happy life.

Yet happiness eluded them. Emily struggled with houseworkeither she couldnt manage hoovering, dusting, or having dinner ready on time, or she simply didnt want to. She blamed her late hours and exhaustion. Fair enough, but James was just as worn out from his own gruelling schedule.

Soon, their flat became a battleground over who did more. For six months, laundry piled up, dishes sat unwashed, and neither dared admit to their families why they bickered. Pride kept them silent.

One weekend, James went fishing with his father-in-law, Williama shared passion that bonded them. By the campfire, whisky in hand, James confided in him, swearing him to secrecy, especially from his mother-in-law.

William promised discretion but mused, Your home wont find peace without a house guardian. Ive one in mind. Give me time, and Ill persuade it to move in.

James thought him mad but held his tongue.

The following week, William arrived with a kitten. James was furiousmore mess? But William pulled him aside on the balcony, lit a cigar, and reminded him of the guardian. Hed brought it with the cat, he insisted, and things would improve. Just treat the little thing kindly.

To James surprise, he adored the cat at once. Tiny and affectionate, she shadowed him, demanding cuddles. Only once did he clean up a minor accidentbut that was it.

The next evening, he returned to a spotless flat. No clutter, and Emily was cooking a proper roast! Heartened, James finally put up the bathroom shelf hed long neglected.

The next day, Emily was hoovering. Chipping in, he took out the bins and fetched bread, even grabbing a bottle of wine. Dinner felt like a celebrationtheir first in ages.

The week carried on like this, joy seeping back into their home. Come Sunday night, Emily said, Dont pop home tomorrow. Ive bought litter and set up a spot for your cat in the loo.

For *what*?

Your little shadow. I know youve been sneaking home to tidy. But dont worryIve got it handled.

James was stunned. He *hadnt* been home. Hed assumed *she* was cleaning. Had she been ashamed to idle in a tidy house?

The next day, he left work early to investigate. He pretended to leave but crept back, hiding with his phone.

At noon, keys jingled in the lock. The kitten dashed to the door, mewing eagerly. A gentle voice cooed, Oh, Mittens, Ive missed you! Brought you cream and a fresh treat. Look at you, using your tray like a pro

The bedroom door swung open. There stood Williamface flushing when he spotted James.

So *this* is your house guardian, eh?

William stammered, Well, I gave you the cat. Thought Id help care for her, at first.

And the key?

Swiped it fishing, had a copy made, and slipped it back. You never noticed

Three years on, James and Emily are happily raising their son. And to this day, no one knows who truly was the guardian that once watched over their flat.
