A Stranger at the Door: From Unrequited Schoolboy Love to a Second Chance Romance on New Year’s Eve
A stranger stood on the doorstep.
Edward had been smitten with Emily since their school days. He wrote her secret notes and went out of his way to draw her attention, no matter how foolish he might appear.
But Emily had eyes only for Daniela tall, fair-haired boy who played volleyball alongside her on the school team.
The awkward Edward, never quite excelling in his studies, didnt stand a chance as far as Emily was concerned.
It wasnt long before Daniel started courting Charlotte, a girl from the class next door.
After they all left school, Edward tried again to win Emily over.
He even proposed to her at the end-of-year prom.
But the girl replied sharply with a No! She wouldnt even entertain the idea of being with him.
After university, Emily took a job as a bookkeeper. Her new boss was an attractive, dark-haired man, older than her by a decade.
Emily was taken by his confidence, striking looks, and sharp wit.
Feelings blossomed between them. Emily paid no heed to the fact that her chosen man was married with a young son.
Mr. Henry Bennett promised he would divorce and swore he cared only for her.
Years slipped by, and soon Emily grew used to spending weekends and holidays alone. She kept hoping her beloved would keep his promise and theyd build a life together.
One day, she saw Henry at the local grocers, his wife on his arm.
She was expecting, and he carried her bags with the utmost care before they both set off, chatting cheerfully to their car.
With tears in her eyes, Emily watched their picture-perfect scene.
The next day, Emily handed in her resignation.
As New Years Eve approached, she felt no joy in shopping for food, stringing up decorations or preparing for a celebration.
Returning home one evening, she found her own house cold and unwelcoming. The old boiler had packed up. Emily lived by herself in a cottage on the edge of town.
She tried phoning out for a repairman, but on the eve of the holiday, everyone wanted a hefty feeespecially when they learned theyd have to drive out to the outskirts.
Feeling helpless, Emily rang her old friend Abigail. Perhaps Abigails husband, who worked in heating repairs, might be able to help.
Abigail promised to call her husband straight away.
Two hours later, Emily heard the doorbell ring.
On her doorstep stood a stranger, yet as she peered closer, she recognised him it was Edward, her old schoolmate.
Evening, Emily, whats gone wrong here then?
Oh how did you know?
My boss asked me to head out here, said someone was freezing and needed a hand. Have you drained the water out of the radiators so they dont freeze up?
No, I wouldnt know how.
Youll have to be careful, otherwise youll be left without heat at all. Lucky theres no hard frost tonight.
Edward quickly drained the system, fiddled with the boiler, and soon left.
Within an hour, he was back with the right parts.
Before long, warmth crept back into Emilys little home. Edward washed his hands and then asked,
Emily, youve got a leaky tap and a flickering bulb too cant your husband set them right?
I dont have a husband
Oh? Still searching for Mr Perfect?
Hardly, Emily admitted quietly. Theres no one at all.
Edward grinned, Then why did you turn me down back then?
She gave no answer.
After mending the tap and replacing the bulb, Edward headed home.
Emily sat, thinking of childhood, her school years, and the chubby boy whod once adored her.
Edward had changed remarkablynow tall, with chestnut eyes, every inch a gentleman. But his warm smile was just as she remembered.
She never even thought to ask if he had a wife.
On the thirty-first of December, the bell rang again.
Emily, surprised, went to answershe wasnt expecting visitors.
Standing before her was Edward, dressed in a smart new suit with a bouquet in hand.
Emily! I have to ask once more: will you marry me, or will you wait forever for your fairy-tale prince?
With tears streaming down her cheeks, Emily nodded joyfully.
At long last, when he proposed a second time, she acceptedEdward laughed, his eyes shining as he stepped inside, the cold air swirling about them one final time before the door closed. Emily took his handwarm, calloused from years of good workand answered, voice trembling, Lets not waste any more of our lives wishing for something else.
Firelight flickered across their faces as they sat together, close at last. Outside, fireworks exploded above the snowy rooftops, painting the night with color and promise. Emily leaned her head on Edwards shoulder, feeling the ache of old disappointments melt away with each gentle beat of his heart.
Midnight bells rang, echoing across the winter fields. Behind the frosted windowpane, laughter sparkledthe laughter of hope rediscovered.
In that quiet cottage at the edge of town, two hearts warmed to the new year, no longer waiting for happiness to arrive but creating it together, at last.
