After 34 Years of Marriage with My Wife, I’ve Fallen for Someone Else—Now I’m Lost and Don’t Know How to Move Forward
My name is George. Im sixty-five, married for over forty years, and lately Ive fallen for someone else. My wife, Margaret, is sixty-two. We have an adult son, David, whos married with children of his own. After David moved out and started his own family, Margaret and I became strangers living in the same house.
When we both retired, I thought it would be wonderful to buy a cottage in a quiet village. Margaret wasnt keen on the idea, but I persuaded her. We bought a charming little house, and spent our summers there. I adored the countryside the crisp morning air, the birdsong, the garden but Margaret was miserable. She preferred her routines: lounging on the sofa, immersed in novels, or watching telly. She refused to help with the gardening, always insisting she felt ill. So I did everything alone.
When autumn came, we returned to the city. Margaret was thrilled to be back among the bustle. But after just a week, I packed a suitcase and returned to the village. I felt alive there. Margaret stayed in London, and now we rarely see each other.
In the village, I met a woman named Anne. Shes sixty. At first, I wasnt sure shed ever reciprocate my feelings, but now were happy together. I want to ask Margaret for a divorce, but I dread how David will react. For now, I tell Margaret Im busy with chores at the cottage. The truth is, I spend most of my time with Anne.
Margaret hasnt a clue. I havent found the courage to tell her I want to leave. Im stuck, torn between my heart and my family. I dont know what to do.
