After Twenty-One Years of Marriage, One Evening My Wife Said to Me:
23October2025 London
Tonight, after twentyone years of marriage, Eleanor turned to me with a halfsmile and said,
James, you need to take another woman out for dinner and a cinema.
I blinked, taken aback. She softened her gaze and added quietly,
I love you, but I know theres someone else who loves you too and has been waiting for a bit of your time.
That other woman was my mother, Margaret. Shed been on her own for nineteen years since my father passed away. Between work, caring for our three children, and the endless chores, I barely saw her.
Later that evening I rang her.
Mum, how about we go out tomorrow for dinner and a film? Just the two of us.
Is everything alright, love? Whats the matter? she asked, a trace of worry in her voice.
Mum always assumed an unexpected call meant bad news.
Its fine, Mum. I just want to spend an evening with you.
She fell silent for a heartbeat, then replied warmly,
Id love that.
On Friday after work I drove to her flat. She was already waiting, dressed up in the same dress shed worn on our wedding anniversary years ago, her cheeks pink with anticipation.
I told the ladies I have a date with my son, she laughed, and theyre all waiting to hear how it went.
We slipped into a cosy little bistro on the South Bank. She took my arm, as gently as she used to when I was a child. When the menu arrived, I read it aloud because the print was tiny for her.
I used to read menus to you, she smiled.
Now its my turn, Mum, I replied.
We talked for ages about the years gone by, the memories wed tucked away, the small joys and the regrets that had built up over time. We missed the film, but we didnt mind.
When I drove her home, she said, Lets do this again, but next time Ill be the one inviting. I grinned and agreed.
A few days later Margaret suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away. I never got the chance to say a proper goodbye.
Weeks later a plain envelope arrived. Inside was a photocopy of the restaurant bill, £48.73, and a handwritten note:
I paid in advance. I wasnt sure Id be there, but I wanted to cover a dinner for you and your wife. Youll never know how much that night meant to me. I love you, my son.
That moment struck me like a cold wind. Never postpone the words I love you. Give the people you cherish the time you have. Family isnt something for the future its what we live for right now.
