Dad Returned After 24 Years Bearing Sweets and Instant Coffee
I used to think stories like this were only found on the internet, but now I am living through one myself.
When I was six years old, my dad left my mum and mejust disappeared overnight. Suddenly, it was the three of us: Mum, my two younger twin sisters, and myself. For a long while, Mum tried to protect me from the truth, telling me that Dad was away on a business trip, but deep down I knew what had really happened. When she realised there was no point in hiding it any longer, she finally said, Your dad isnt part of our lives anymore!
My young mind couldnt grasp all the grown-up complexities. I was angry at my dad and fantasised about him coming back, but he never did. Mum devoted herself to raising us; she never remarried or tried to start a new life. It was tough for hernot many people want to take on a divorced woman with three children. Time moved on. Now, Im married myself, with children, living in the countryside. We have a small farm and an apple orchard. Its young yet, but its actually beginning to turn a bit of a profit.
A few months back, I received a call from a man I didnt recognise. He said he needed to speak with me urgentlyhe even mentioned he might be interested in buying apples wholesale. Of course, I agreed. We met in my orchard and he turned out to be a bald, round man, who smiled at me and handed me a package. I opened it and found cheap sweets and a jar of instant coffee. I was puzzled. Then he said quietly:
Im your father.
I didnt know what to say. I just muttered, Have you ever been in prison? No. Are you planning to buy apples then? No. Right, wellgoodbye. Goodbye.
He left his bag on my bench. I chased after him to return his cheap gifts. I wonder what he was expecting to happen. I warned my sisters that Dad might show up, and I was proved righthe turned up to see them with the same bag in hand. How do you come back after twenty-four years with just a jar of instant coffee? Can you explain that to me?
