Давня поява рудого кота в моєму житті.
Було це давно. Жив у мене рудий кіт. Красунчик, розбещений і завжди в центрі уваги. Дивовижно лагідний і добрий малюк. Але як його звали, не скажу. Бо називав я його – Сонечко. І як ім’я, і як характер, і як світло в моєму вікні. Він завжди приходив до мене на руки сам і просив, щоб я погладив його і поговорив. І в ті рідкісні години, коли я з’являвся вдома, він був моєю єдиною розрадою.
Працював я тоді на двох роботах і рідко бував вдома, що, втім, нікому не заважало і не тривожило нікого. Сімейне життя в той час у мене не склалося. Отож, він мені заміняв усе, що тільки можна замінити. І лагідність, тепло і увагу я отримував саме від мого Сонечка. На це ім’я він і відгукувався.
Одного похмурого осіннього дня він захворів. Захворів і почав кашляти. А я не відвів його до ветеринара. Здавалося, саме собою мине. Здавалося, завтра. Варто лише трохи відпочити, і одразу знайду час. Здавалося, неодмінно встигну, і з ним усе буде гаразд.
А Сонечко ліз до мене на руки в ті рідкісні моменти, коли я приходив, і, притулившись, дивився мені в очі. І через кілька місяців він помер. Тихенько пішов на Світлу полянку. В один із моїх повернень просто заснув на моїх руках і більше не прокинувся…
П’ятнадцять років минуло з тих пір. П’ятнадцять довгих років. І коти інші в мене були й є. І любив я їх усіх, і люблю. Але іноді. Та що там іноді. Дуже часто у сні приходить до мене моє Сонечко і, влаштувавшись на коліна, дивиться мені в очі. А я намагаюсь пояснити йому і прошу пробачення. І не можу знайти слова. І всі слова здаються не такими, і кажу не те.
І кожен раз я згадую це і стає мені так боляче, і так шкода, і так стискає всередині, ніби це сталося лише вчора. І віддав би я все, щоб повернути той час і відвести моє Сонечко до лікаря. Щоб він врятував його. І не можу я пробачити себе. І немає нікого, хто міг би звинуватити мене сильніше, ніж я сам. І здається мені, що він би неодмінно залишився живим.
І знаю я, що це понесу до самого кінця, і в останній свій день я знову пошкодую, що не врятував своє єдине Сонечко. Не шкодуйте…
Не шкодуйте, заради Бога, нічого. Нічого, зовсім нічого для своїх чотирилапих сонечок. Ні любові, ні часу, ні грошей, ні уваги. І якщо для цього треба відкласти всі свої справи. Всі свої найважливіші справи. То зробіть це! Зробіть це негайно!
Щоб потім не мучити себе до кінця життя. І не просити темними ночами прощення у цих очей…

Hoo-ha-ha-ha… His girlfriend giggled softly, both of them with equally vacant expressions. With some effort, I managed not to start an argument with the pregnant girl. Next, the soon-to-be dad launched into a new topic—food. – I’m famished! Ya-ya-ya-ya-ya… – I’m hungry, and it’ll be another half hour in this queue… – Let’s go get sausage rolls! We’ll come back after! – I don’t want sausage rolls. – You’ve become so picky! Hoo-ha-ha-ha… Everyone’s head was pounding from listening to them, but thank goodness, the pair finally left—I don’t know if they went for sausage rolls or pasties, but that was irrelevant.
