Desperate and Destitute, She Agreed to Wed the Wealthy Heir Confined to a Wheelchair… Then, Just a Month Later, She Discovered the Shocking Truth…
Out of sheer desperation, she agreed to marry the wealthy mans son who couldnt walk And a month later, she noticed
You cant be serious, Emily said, gaping at William Harrington with wide eyes.
He shook his head.
Afraid not. But Ill give you time to think. Its not exactly a conventional proposal. I can guess whats running through your mind. Take a weekweigh it carefully. Ill come back then.
Emily watched him leave, utterly baffled. His words rattled around her head like loose marbles.
Shed known William Harrington for three years. He owned a chain of petrol stations and a few other ventures. Emily worked part-time as a cleaner at one of them. He was always decent to the staff, polite and warm. A proper gentleman, really.
The pay was decent, so there was no shortage of applicants. About two months ago, as her shift wound down, she was sitting outsidejust killing time before clocking out.
Suddenly, the service door swung open, and William appeared.
Mind if I join you?
Emily leapt up.
Of courseno need to ask!
No need to jump like that. Sit, I dont bite. Lovely day, isnt it?
She smiled and settled back down.
Spring always feels like a gift after winter.
Thats because were all sick of the gloom.
Suppose youre right.
Ive been meaning to askwhy work as a cleaner? Margaret offered to move you to cashier, didnt she? Better pay, easier hours.
Id love to. But my little girl, Lily, gets poorly often. When shes fine, the neighbour minds her. When shes not, I have to be there. Margaret and I swap shifts when needed. Shes been a lifesaver.
Ah whats wrong with Lily?
Dont get me started. The doctors are stumped. She has these episodescant breathe, panics, all sorts. The proper tests are private. They say she might grow out of it. But I cant just wait around
Hang in there. Itll sort itself out.
That evening, Emily found out William had given her an unexpected bonusno explanation, just handed over the envelope.
She didnt see him again until today, when he turned up at her flat.
Her heart nearly stopped when she spotted him. And when she heard his proposalwell, that was another shock entirely.
William had a sonOliver, nearly thirty. Seven of those years hed spent in a wheelchair after an accident. The doctors did their best, but he never walked again. Depression, withdrawal, barely speakingnot even to his father.
So William had an idea: marry off his son. Properly. Give him a reason to live, to fight. He wasnt sure it would work, but he had to try. And Emily seemed perfect for the job.
Emily, youll want for nothing. Lily will get every test, every treatment. Im offering a one-year contract. After that, youre freeno matter what. If Oliver improvesbrilliant. If notyoull be well compensated.
Emily was too stunned to speakindignation bubbling up inside her.
As if reading her mind, William said quietly,
Emily, please, help me. Its mutually beneficial. I doubt Oliver will even well, you know. Youll have respect, security. Think of it as marrying for circumstance, not love. Just dont breathe a word of this to anyone.
Wait does Oliver even agree?
William sighed.
He says he doesnt care. Ill tell him Ive got business troubles, health issues The important thing is hes married. Properly. Hes always trusted me. So this is a white lie for a good cause.
William left, and Emily sat there, numb. Anger simmered, but his honesty took the edge off the absurdity.
And if she really thought about it what wouldnt she do for Lily?
Anything.
And him? He was a father too. He loved his son just as fiercely.
Her shift wasnt even over when the phone rang:
Emily, quick! Lilys having one of her episodesbad this time!
Im on my way! Call an ambulance!
She arrived just as the paramedics pulled up.
Where were you, Mum? one asked sharply.
At work
It was worse than usual.
Should we take her to hospital? Emily asked weakly.
The paramedic, new to Lilys case, waved a tired hand.
Whats the point? They wont do much there. You need proper specialistsLondon, maybe.
Forty minutes later, they left.
Emily picked up the phone and dialled William.
Im in. Lily just had another episode.
The next day, they were off.
William himself came to fetch themwith a clean-cut young man in tow.
Emily, just bring the essentials. Well sort the rest.
She nodded.
Lily eyed the carbig and shinywith delight.
William crouched in front of her.
Like it?
So much!
Fancy sitting up front? Best view in the house.
Can I? Please?
Lily glanced at her mum.
The policell have our heads, Emily said sternly.
William laughed and opened the door.
Hop in, Lily! If anyone tries to fine us, well fine them right back!
The closer they got to the house, the more Emilys nerves kicked in.
What on earth have I agreed to? What if hes odd, or worse?
William noticed her tension.
Emily, relax. The weddings not for a week. You can back out anytime. And Olivers a good lad. Sharp as a tack. Just lost his way. Youll see.
Emily stepped out, helped Lily down, and froze. The house wasnt a houseit was a manor. Lily squealed:
Mum, are we living in a fairy tale now?!
William chuckled, scooping her up.
Do you like it?
Love it!
In the days before the wedding, Emily and Oliver only met a handful of timesat dinner. He barely spoke, barely ate. Just sat there, miles away. Emily studied him. Handsome, but pale, like hed forgotten what sunshine was. She sensed he carried his own pain. And she was grateful he never mentioned the marriage.
On the wedding day, it felt like half of Surrey was fussing over Emily. The dress arrived the night before. When she saw it, she nearly fainted.
How much did this cost?
William smiled.
Best not to ask. Herelook at this.
He pulled out a tiny version of the wedding dress.
Lily, fancy trying it on?
Her shriek nearly shattered the windows. Then came the fittingLily paraded around like a tiny duchess, glowing.
At one point, Emily turned and saw Oliver. He stood in his doorway, watching Lily. For the first time, there was the ghost of a smile in his eyes.
Lily now had the room next to theirs. Their bedroom. A month ago, Emily couldnt have imagined this.
William suggested a honeymoon at the country estate, but Oliver shook his head.
Thanks, Dad. Well stay put.
The bed was massive. Oliver kept to his side, made no moves. Emily, whod planned to stay alert all night, somehow drifted off.
A week passed. They began talking in the evenings. Oliver was sharp, funny, well-read. He never pushed. Slowly, Emily relaxed.
One night, she woke with a joltheart racing.
Somethings wrong
She dashed to Lilys room. Just as she fearedLily was mid-episode.
Oliver, help! Call an ambulance!
He was at the door in seconds, phone in hand. Moments later, a bleary-eyed William rushed in.
Ill ring Dr. Whitmore myself.
The ambulance arrived fastsmart suits, fancy kit. Then the family doctor. They huddled after Lily stabilised. Emily sat with her daughter. Oliver stayed close, holding Lilys hand.
Emily, he asked softly, has she always had these?
Yes So many hospitals, so many tests. Nothing helped. Thats why her dad walked out.
Did you love him?
Once. Feels like another lifetime.
So you agreed to Dads plan
Emily blinked.
Oliver smiled.
Dad thinks Im clueless. But Ive always read him like a book. I was terrified of who hed drag in. Then I saw youand realised you werent the type to do this for money. Now it all makes sense.
He looked at her.
Dont cry. Well fix Lily. Shes tough. Not like me.
Why say
