During the divorce, a wealthy husband decided to leave his wife an abandoned farm in the rolling wilds of Yorkshire. Yet, a year later, something happened that caught him completely off guard.

Edward, you know I dont need you here, dont you? said Alice firmly, her voice steady. I suggest you head back to the city.

What city are you talking about? he replied wearily. Betrayed by the man she once trusted most, Alice hardly had the strength left to argue. Theyd started their lives anew together, selling their tiny London flat and pouring everything they had into their business. Edward had contributed only a single bedroom from his old council flat, while Alices wit and dedication had ensured their success. Theyd lived frugally, moving from one bedsit to another, but eventually, theyd gained stabilityat least, or so she thought.

With time, Edward started behaving like a true lord of the manor. Cunningly, he transferred all their assets into his name, making sure Alice would end up with nothing should they ever part ways. Once every last penny was under his control, he filed for divorce.

Do you really think this is fair, Edward? Alice asked, disappointment etched deep into her features.

He just shrugged with cold indifference. Dont start all that again. You havent contributed in ages. Im the one doing all the work now; you do nothing.

Youre the one who told me to take a break, to look after myself, Alice replied, calm and unwavering.

Edward gave a huff of irritation. Ive had enough of these pointless chats. Oh, by the way, do you remember that old farm I inherited from my former boss, Mr. Peterson? He died and left me that patch of useless land up in Yorkshire. Its just right for you. If you dont want it, youll get nothing at all.

Alice stifled a bitter smile. She knew exactly what he was up to. After twelve years together, it was clear shed been living with a stranger.

Fine. But on one conditionI want the farm transferred into my name officially.

No trouble at all, Edward smirked sarcastically. Will save me on council tax anyway.

Alice said no more. She packed her belongings and booked herself into a modest inn. She was determined to start over, no matter what awaited her whether that was a derelict farmhouse or simply a barren field. She would find out when she got there. If it wasnt worthwhile, shed simply return to the city or hunt for another chance at rebuilding her life.

She loaded her car with only the essentials, leaving the rest behind for Edward and his new girlfriend. If Edward thought he could still rely on her resourcefulness, he was sorely mistaken. His new partner, whom Alice had met just the once, seemed more arrogant than clever.

Edward handed her the title deeds with a mocking smile. Best of luck!

To you as well, Alice replied, her tone composed.

And dont forget to send me a postcard from the cows! he laughed.

Without so much as a glance back, Alice shut her car door and drove away. As she passed through the outskirts of Manchester, tears streamed down her cheeks. She had no idea how long shed wept before a soft tapping on the car window brought her back to reality.

Are you all right, love? My husband and I have seen you here for a while now, a kindly old woman asked her gently.

Alice looked at the woman, then glanced in her side mirror; she noticed a bus stop behind her. A faint smile touched her lips.

Im fine, just a bit overwhelmed, she confessed.

The elderly woman nodded with a look of understanding. Weve just come from the hospital. Our neighbours in there all alonenobody ever visits her. Are you heading up towards Ripon by any chance?

Alices eyes widened in surprise. Ripon? The very place where the farm is?

Yes, though its a stretch to call it a farm these days, the woman replied. The old owner passednow nobody looks after it. Only a handful of folks still care for the animals, bless them.

Alice smiled softly. What a coincidencethats exactly where Im going. Hop in, Ill take you.

The old lady settled herself in the front, her husband in the back. Im Margaret Holmes and this heres my Jack, the woman introduced warmly as Alice restarted the car.

Im Alice, she replied, exchanging a genuine smile.

Along the way, Alice learned all about the farmwhod been stealing, who still tended to the creatures out of love, and just how badly the place had been left. When they finally arrived, all she saw were empty fields, a crumbling barn, and no more than twenty forlorn cows. Still, she made her decision: she would stay, and she would fight for her new beginning.

A year later, Alice stood with pride, watching eighty cows graze contentedly in lush, green meadows. Shed transformed the desolate farmstead into a thriving business. It had been anything but easyshed sold her jewellery to afford feed and sunk every last savings into the venture. But now, orders were rolling in, and even neighbouring counties sought her produce.

One day, a young woman named Emily brought Alice the local paper, pointing out an advert for refrigerated lorries at a fair price. Instantly, Alice recognised the phone numberit belonged to Edwards company. With a sly grin, she asked Emily to ring up and offer five percent above asking, on the condition the trucks not be shown to other buyers.

When Alice arrived to inspect the vehicles, she found herself face-to-face with Edward, who stared back at her in disbelief.

Youre buying them? he stammered.

Yes, for the farm you thought was worthless. Its quite the enterprise now, and were expanding, Alice replied, calm and collected.

Edward was lost for words. While his own life was slowly unraveling, Alice had left him in the past and refused to look back.

In the end, it was at the christening of their newborn daughter that Alice finally found happiness with John, a skilled mechanic whod helped her rebuild the farm from the ground up. Together, they celebrated with friends and neighbours, while Edward could only watch from afar as his world slowly fell apart.
