Father Noticed a Bruise Under His Daughter’s Eye and Made a Call – His Son-in-Law’s Life Was Ruined.

Published

on

The father spotted a bruise beneath his daughters eye and made a callhis son-in-laws life was about to unravel.

Emily stood in the doorway, greeting her parents with her usual cheerful smile. Only a dark, gleaming shiner betrayed the subject she refused to discuss.

Mum, its nothing, dont make a fuss, she said quickly, noticing her mothers sharp gaze.

Margaret sighed deeply. Its your life, love. Youve got to live it…

Her father didnt even acknowledge his son-in-law. He drifted to the window, staring blankly, as if deaf to his daughters muttering about wardrobes and shadows.

I just… tripped last night. Honestly, Mum, everythings fineJames and I are fine!

Fine? Emily remembered exactly what had happened. James, always simmering with rage, hadnt just shouted. When shed dared say shed had enough, hed grabbed her dressing gown collar so hard she felt her ribs crack.

You ungrateful cow, hed snarled, shaking her. Who kept you alive when you were throwing yourself at that Daniel? Who loved you, you stupid tart? I carried you!

Then the punch. Stars burst behind her eyes, pain swallowed her whole… while James kept roaring obscenities.

Yes, love. Wardrobe… shadows, her mother murmured, though she knew the truth.

And guilt gnawed at her. Shed pushed Emily into marrying James! Shed driven Daniel away, convinced he was a bad influence.

Your wardrobe, dear, seems to have fists, Margaret said dryly, glancing at her son-in-law.

William never turned from the window. He stepped onto the balcony to smoke. Unlike his wife, hed never liked Jamessmug, hollow, rotten beneath the money, the car, the connections.

Now the rot had surfaceda bruise on his daughters face.

He couldve grabbed James by the lapels and knocked him senseless. But that would only cause a scene. So he stepped outside.

Hed fix this another way.

Hed spent a long time on the phone out here…

Meanwhile, Emily bought her mother a coffee, chatting about nothing. Half an hour later, her parents left.

James, braced for a row, finally relaxed. He sprawled on the sofa, cracked open a lager, and smirked. Silence meant approval, didnt it? Family stuck together. Bruises were just life. No one crossed him.

See, Emmy? Told you itd blow over, he drawled. Your folks are decent. Not like you… whinging at me last night. Had a few pintsso what?

He took a swig and reached for crisps.

His joy was short-lived.

Within half an hour, someone knockednot rangsharp and firm. James froze mid-sip.

He peered through the peephole… and paled.

Daniel stood there. His rival. Emilys ex. The one whod nearly married her. Tall, confident, in a sharp coat, with that grin that made women sigh and men itch to hit him.

What dyou want? James growled, barely opening the door.

Step aside, Daniel said coolly, shoving past him.

James crumpled like wet paper.

Emily shot up from the sofa. Daniel?

Pack a bag, he said simply. Well go to mine, or your parents. But youre done with this wreck.

Who you calling a wreck? James spat, but didnt move from the corner.

He had reasons to fear Daniel.

I called you, Jamie, Daniel smiled. Didnt want to interfere. But when your father-in-lawa proper blokerang me about the bruise? Well, I took over.

James choked. Whatwhatre you on about?

Not literally, of course, Daniel chuckled. But that club you lease? Belongs to a mate. A very good mate. Youll get noticerents not being renewed. The letters already on your desk.

James sagged like a deflated balloon.

Oh, and I tallied six months arrears. Remember when they said rent might rise if you turned a profit? Well, it did. And you never read the notice. Me and Mike kept quiet, let the debt pile up. Penalties, interest… You get it? Youre sunk.

Daniel leaned in. And I know youre skint. Shouldve spent less on booze and birds.

James slumped like a wrung-out rag.

Thisthis is a setup! he wheezed.

Think what you like. Sue me. But your solicitors quit. Wholl defend you? Your barman with the nose ring?

James gaped wordlessly.

Emily, lets go. Dont bother with your things. Ill buy you new ones.

Daniel, wait, she said faintly. This is… sudden.

Sudden is taking a fist to the face and making excuses. The rest is too slow.

He held out his hand. She took it.

Youre all mad! James screeched. This is my house! My wife!

Wife? Daniel scoffed. Youre the bloke who hits her, then hides behind a six-pack? Youre not a man. Youre a joke.

James sputtered uselessly.

Emily paused at the door, not looking back. Sorry, James. Goodbye.

Piss off, then! he snarled.

And they left.

Two days later, James sat in an empty flat. The club was shut. Papers littered the tableeviction notices, debt demands.

Daniel hadnt just been an ex. Hed been waiting. And when he struck, it was flawless.

Meanwhile, Emilys parents home was quiet. Her mother cooked; her father read the paper.

Emily walked in.

Been with Daniel, she said.

Left James, then? her father asked.

Yeah.

Her mother clasped her hands. Her father nodded.

Good. And if that prat comes near you again, Ill rearrange his face.

Dad… you called Daniel?

Course. Hes a proper lad. Unlike that waste of space.

Thank God youre rid of him! her mother cried. Im sorry, loveI nearly ruined your life.

Outside, Daniel leaned against his black Range Rover, grinning. He knewno one would ever hurt Emily again.

Well, maybe with love. But thats another story.
