Seeing his wife, he didn’t get up, didn’t look embarrassed, and didn’t even try to pretend it had all happened by chance. He simply ran his palm slowly over his chin and turned his gaze away, as if expecting Irene to deal with his family first and talk to him later. That indifferent confidence was what annoyed her most. Irene had come home much later than usual. That evening she’d had to stop at the workshop to collect her phone after the screen replacement, then pop into the hardware shop for new water filters, and by the entrance she’d waited ten minutes while the neighbour unloaded the lift.
