He Refused to Marry His Pregnant Girlfriend. His Mother Backed Him, But His Father Stood Up for the Unborn Child.
He refused to marry his pregnant girlfriend. His mother backed him, but his father stood up for the unborn child.
“Dad, I’ve got news. The neighbours girl, Lily shes pregnant. Its mine,” said Oliver, barely stepping through the door.
Victor, his father, paused for a moment, then spoke calmly.
“Then marry her.”
“What? Im too young. This isnt the time for a family, especially since we barely even dated”
“Really?” His father scoffed bitterly. “So you were man enough to chase after girls, but when its time to face the consequences, you turn into a child. Fine.” Without another word, he raised his voice and called for his wife. “Margaret! Come here a moment!”
Margaret walked into the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron.
“Whats happened?”
“Listen. Our sons got a girl pregnant and wont do right by her. Lily, the neighbours daughter. Shes carrying his child, and hes hiding like a rat.”
Margaret didnt even flinch. Her face hardened.
“And good for him. Why should we take in the first girl that comes along? These girls are craftyfind a man with more money, let themselves slip, then come crying, Marry me! And whos to say its even his? Make him get a test. Besides, we shouldnt pressure Oliverhes still young. Hes a man, it was hard to resist. But were not obliged to raise someone elses child.”
Victor sighed deeply and spoke quietly.
“But what if it *is* his?”
“And if it is? Should we bear the burden? Tell him to get the tests donethen well know for sure.”
She turned and walked out, leaving Victor alone with his son.
“You know, I was young once too,” he began. “I loved someone else, but I married your mother. Not for lovefor duty. Because being a man isnt just about passion. Its about choices and consequences. She was pregnant. I didnt know if I could be with her, but I knew one thingthe child was blameless. My blood, my conscience. And Oliver though it wasnt easy, Ive never once regretted staying.”
Three months passed. The DNA test confirmed it99.9% probability. Oliver was the father of Lilys child.
“So what?” Margaret laughed when Victor set the paper in front of her. “Yes, hes the father. That doesnt mean Lilys stepping foot in this house. Not a chance! Ive said my piece!”
Oliver stood silent, staring at his hands. His face told the truthhed chosen his mothers side. He clenched his fists but said nothing.
Victor slowly rose from the table.
“If the two of you have made your choice, then hear mine.”
His voice was low, but sharp as a blade.
“As long as I live, my grandchild will want for nothing. Ive got land. Ill build a house, and that child*my* grandchildwill have everything Ive worked for. And you two? Youll get nothing from me. I wont be part of this disgrace. Oliver, from today on, youre no son of mine. Everything I have goes to the child. Not a single penny to either of you.”
Margaret exploded.
“Have you lost your mind? Youd cut off your own son?!”
Victor didnt answer. He just turned and walked away, ignoring the shouts and curses behind him. Oliver stood frozen, unable to believe what hed just heard. But he knew one thingwhen Victor spoke, he meant it.
