He’s Already 35—With No Wife or Kids: A Mother’s Regret and the Impact of Overprotective Parenting in Modern Britain

Published

on

Hes already 35 and still has neither children nor a wife.

Just a week ago, I was at my mother-in-laws house with my son. One of her childhood friends happened to be visiting that day. She spent the entire afternoon playing with my little boy.

“Its such a shame that I dont have any grandchildren,” she sighed wistfully.

The friend had had a son of her own when she was well past thirty. She adored this long-awaited child, giving him everything he desired. Her husband passed away when their boy was still just a toddler, so she raised him herself, juggling two jobs to keep the household afloat.

When her son turned thirty-five, she finally gathered the courage to ask him when she might expect to hear the patter of little feet in the house.

He looked at her calmly and answered, “Never.”

He blamed his mothers upbringing, saying it was her faultthat she’d, in his words, sheltered him too much.

“Im far too used to an uncomplicated life. No woman in her right mind would want to be like a second mother to me,” he said, his tone steady but resigned.

He went on to say that, really, he was quite content with his life as it was, and he had no intention of changing for anyone else.

“I dont need anyone but you, Mum,” he added quietly.

“I failed to teach him the most important thing of allto be a man,” the woman admitted, her voice trembling.

Do you agree? Can a mothers love both protect her child and, at the same time, hinder them from becoming their own person?

Id love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
