I believed my marriage was solid—until a friend’s unexpected question made me rethink everything

Published

on

I married when I was quite young, swept up by a deep love. We dated for four years before tying the knot and becoming husband and wife. Together, we have weathered a lot.

Weve now shared a home for over six years. I trust my husband completely, and I know myself well too. Hes incredibly gentle, caring, and always considerate. He always lends a hand with the housework. My husband isnt the boldest or the strongest man youll meet, and I cant call him particularly handsome, but he possesses an outstandingly kind heart. His optimistic outlook and unwavering belief in the goodness of people fill our lives with hope and the strength to manage even the toughest times.

But I must admit he can be indecisive and hesitant, almost unable to make big decisions or step outside his comfort zone. He is painfully shy and unfailingly proper. In the six years weve lived together, he has not changed a bit.

He doesnt show much interest in looking after himself or his health. Any sort of change seems to scare him. My husband is nearly ten years older than I am. At twenty-six, I adore life. I have a rewarding job, my own car, and Im paying off the mortgage on our house. Recently, a friend asked me, Why do you even need him?

Since then, I havent been able to shake the thought. I find myself sitting here, wondering, Why do I really need him?

And then I realisesometimes, what matters most isnt bold looks or grand gestures, but a gentle heart beside you, lighting the way through lifes challenges. In the end, true happiness might just be found in the quiet presence of someone who truly believes in the goodness of the world, and in you.
