I found out my son had abandoned a pregnant woman. I paid her solicitors fees myself.

When I learned what my precious boy had done, it felt as though the world had knocked the wind right out of me. Not out of shame, but for the poor young woman Id once seen weaving through traffic on her battered moped, delivering takeaways under the relentless August sun, eyes fatigued, her belly noticeably round. That was the moment I decided enough was enoughI would take matters into my own (rather wrinkly) hands.

I knocked on her door one Tuesday afternoon. She answered still in her company polo and work trousers, bump now impossible to ignore, her face a cocktail of exhaustion and defiance that made my heart just about burst.

Yes? she said, a touch wary.

Im the mother of that irresponsible idiot who left you high and dry, I said bluntly, not one for beating about the bush. Ive come to set things right.

Her eyes glazed with tears.

Mrs I really dont want any more trouble

Oh, love, Im not here with more drama. Im here with practical answers. Heard of Patrick Simmons, best family solicitor in this town? His retainers sorted. Youve got a meeting with him tomorrow.

She stared at me, gobsmacked. I barrelled on:

My son may have come out of me, but responsibility has clearly zipped right over his head. Hell be paying child maintenance for that baby, even if hes got to mop pub floors for a decade.

And thats what happened. The solicitor did his job with the finesse of a West End actor. When my granddaughter was bornshe is my granddaughter, whether my son fancies the idea or notI rocked up at the hospital with nappies, babygros, and a flat-pack cot wedged in my boot.

Mrs, you really dont have to

Oh, but I absolutely do, I cut her off. Im the grandma.

Predictably, my son cut me off. Called me a traitor, accused me of meddling, claimed Id ruined his life. I told him, You did the ruining yourself, darling boy. Im just patching up what you broke.

Now its been two years. The young woman and my granddaughter live with me. Shes knuckling down at evening classes to become a nurse, I watch the baby, and were probably the oddest, most mismatched, but fiercest family on the whole cul-de-sac. My son hasnt uttered a word to me since, but the maintenance arrives promptlysolicitors a miracle worker.

Yesterday, while I was feeding the baby her bottle, she hugged me from behind.

Thank you, Mum, she whispered.

Mum.

And you know, I wonder, is there any greater gift than gaining a daughter and granddaughter, even if you temporarily misplace your son? Sometimes, family isnt just the lot youre born intoits the people you choose to stand up for.

Its a tale about responsibility, a conscience that wont quit, and finding love in the least likely places.
