I Don’t Want to Live with My Daughter’s Family! Here’s Why I Believe It’s Best for Us to Have Separa…

I dont want to live with my daughters familyand Ill tell you why.

My daughter and her husband recently found themselves out of a home after a terrible flood made their flat uninhabitable and in need of serious repairs. Needless to say, my daughter, her husband, and their young son moved in with me.

It was quite clear they had no other options, so of course I took them in. However, after a proper discussion with my daughter and son-in-law, we all agreed this was only temporary and theyd return to their own place as soon as possible.

I adore my daughter and my son-in-laws not a bad man, so we were all of the same mind: a family is its own independent unit, and everyone else, even the closest relatives, remain somewhat on the outside. I feel strongly about this, and Ill explain why I hold this view.

I have my own routine, which is worlds apart from the lifestyle of my daughter and her husband. For example, I don’t mind my daughters company in my home, but her husband is much more of a stranger. Of course, he deserves his privacy just as I need mine. Theres not much sense in sweeping arguments about things like my habit of drifting off with the television on, or them inviting friends over without a word. Each of us keeps our own sense of order at hometheres no need for raised voices simply because the washing up didnt get done. Little things like this can sour even the best of relationships.

When it comes to food, our tastes and mealtimes dont match up at all. Then there are moments when unexpected guests appear, and lets be honest, its tempting to try whatever someone else has stashed in the tea cupboard. But one can hardly put a padlock on the fridge, can one?

Different sleeping patterns also become an issue. One is up late, another rises earlyeveryone ends up shuffling about in their socks trying not to disturb anyone. Lack of sleep just makes everyone crotchety, and a silly argument can quickly escalate. Sometimes only a tiny spark is needed for tempers to flare.

Most of all, I dont wish to be in a position to pass judgment on my daughters marriage or family life. Ive already done the teaching; for the rest, I would only like to see what they wish to show me, and nothing more. Thats not possible when you share a roof day in, day out.

And, above all, I want to choose when and how I help my family, freely and happilywhile still having time for myself.

Living together might sound cosy in theory, but in practice, everyone needs their own space to truly feel at peace. Sometimes, the kindest way to nurture the love we have is to keep a comfortable distance.
