I’m 41 Years Old and I Live in My Grandparents’ House – After My Mum Passed Away, It Became Mine. It…

I am 41 now, and the house I live in used to belong to my grandparents. After they passed away, my mother stayed here, and when she was gone, the house was left to me. Its always been a quiet, tidy, peaceful place somewhere I could retreat to after a long day at work and enjoy the solitude. I never imagined that all of this could change because of one decision I made, thinking I was helping out.

Two years ago, I got a tearful call from a distant cousin, Emily. She was going through a breakup, had a little boy, and nowhere to go. She asked if she could stay for a few months until she got back on her feet. I agreed, mostly out of family loyalty and because I truly thought it wouldnt have much of an impact on my routines. At first, things ticked along nicely she took one room, chipped in a little towards the bills, and would be off early each day to work. Her son stayed with a neighbour. There werent any problems.

But after three months, Emily quit her job. She promised it was only temporary, that she was looking for something better, but she began spending all day at home. Now her son stayed in the house too. The place started to change toys everywhere, constant noise, unexpected visitors popping round. Id come home exhausted to find strangers sat in my sitting room. When I asked if she could warn me beforehand, she told me I was overreacting and reminded me that this is her home too, now.

Gradually, she stopped contributing financially. First she said she couldnt manage it that month, then next that shed make it up later. Soon enough, I was paying for everything bills, food, repairs. One day I came home to find shed rearranged all the furniture to make it more comfortable, without even asking me. When I objected, she took offence, calling me cold and saying I didnt know what it meant to live like a family.

Things got worse when she started bringing her ex-partner back. The same man shed been escaping. Hed come over in the evenings, stay the night, use the shower, and help himself to food. One day, I found him leaving my bedroom, claiming he was just borrowing a jacket. That was when I told Emily things had to change, that boundaries were needed. She burst into tears, yelled, and reminded me how Id taken her in when she had nothing.

About six months ago, I tried to set a date for her to move out. She told me she couldnt she had no money, her son was at the local school, and how could I possibly kick her out? I feel completely trapped. My house doesnt feel like mine anymore. I tiptoe in, trying not to wake the child, eat my dinner in my own bedroom to avoid rows, and find myself spending more time outside the house than in it.

I still live here, but it feels nothing like home now. She acts as though the house belongs to her. I pay for everything, yet Im the selfish one whenever I ask for a bit of order. I dont know what to do next. I desperately need advice.
