I’m Glad I Chose Not to Have Children—Now at 70 Years Old, I Have No Regrets

Im glad I made the decision not to have children. Now Im seventy years old, and I have no regrets whatsoever.
Recently, I had an appointment with a dermatologist. As I sat in the waiting area, I found myself next to a woman, and we began to chat. She turned out to be a truly delightful conversationalist. What surprised me most was how my perspective on many things shifted after our conversation.
I couldnt help but notice her elegant, polished appearance. At first glance, I would have thought she was no more than fifty. However, during our exchange, she confided that she was over seventy. Honestly, I wouldnt have guessed. She looked marvellous and carried herself with a confidence and style that set her apart from others her age.
My new acquaintance told me about her life: shed been married twice, but now lived on her own. Shed divorced her first husband while still quite young, because she didnt want to have children.
Her husband had known from the start that she wanted a child-free marriage, but after she turned thirty, he began to hint that a complete family ought to involve children. Yet, year after year, she never felt any maternal urge, so she stood by her decision.
For her, it was better to part ways than to have a child she didnt truly want. They spoke honestly and chose to go their separate ways.
Her second marriage was to a man whod already been through a divorce and had a child from his previous marriage. He didnt want any more children, and the topic simply never arose. He seemed pleased she felt the same. Sadly, their time together was cut short when he died in a car accident.
She admitted that solitude doesnt bother her in the least. On the contrary, she enjoys itshe doesnt have to compromise for anyone. As a pensioner, shes convinced shell never regret her choice.
Many of her friends, who once expected their children to be a source of support, now sigh regretfully. Children grow up, forge their own paths, and elderly parents can end up feeling sidelined. Thats precisely why she never seriously considered having any. Today, shes living life to the fullest and savouring every moment. The absence of children brings her happiness, not sorrow.
And a glass of water? I wont be left destitute and ailing. While my friends spent their savings bringing up children, I put mine away. Now, I have enough in my savings to ensure I can always afford proper care, no matter what happens.
Her story made me reflect on the different ways people find fulfilment and security. Sometimes, happiness comes not from following societys expectations, but from listening to ones own heart and choosing the path that feels right. Its a reminder that a meaningful life is shaped by the decisions we make for ourselves, not those made for us by others.
