I Paid for My Sons Happiness

I mulled it over for ages, and finally decided I would hand-pick my sons wife and, of course, my future daughter-in-law. My plan? Find the right girl, throw them together, and let fate (and a nudge from me) take its course. My sonThomas, the apple of my eyeis obviously Englands most sought-after bachelor. Im fiercely, outrageously devoted to him. Honestly, Ive raised him as my personal pride and joy; since his nappy days, Ive lost sleep, patched up bleeding knees, coached him through life. And now Im supposed to hand this perfect man over to someone else? The injustice!

Id always known thered come a time when Thomas would bring a young lady home, but the idea of giving him up to another woman was insufferable. I needed a plan.

So, when Thomas started noticing girls, I played it cool. His current girlfriend? Oh, she was a spoilt little madam with all the subtlety of a marching band. I told him straight: Darling, shes all wrong for you. We need someone decent, modest, clean as a whistle.

Without a word to Thomas, I shouldered the responsibility of bride-hunting. I needed a girl I could actually talk to you know, someone with sense.

My shortlist was, well, shockingly short. There was the neighbours daughter (Mary), my best friend Helens girl (Sophie), and a handful of old schoolmates. I had a quick chat with Mary and her mum and dear, no. Shes a lovely girl but generously built and, frankly, Thomas deserves someone who wont flatten the garden bench.

Next, I tried Sophie, but she confessed to having a boyfriend alreadycross her off. As for the school friends, the less said about that melee, the better.

Utterly flummoxed, I realised Id run out of options. Desperate times called for desperate measures, so I decided to do a little covert sleuthing. I spun Thomas some story about wanting to see him work. Not exactly what he fancied, but he agreed.

Thus, I spent a whole day lurking at his office like a harmless, slightly overbearing shadow, observing his female co-workers with forensic intensity. I chatted with the women: nothing promising, plenty of eye-rolling.

By home time, it was clear I wasnt going to find the one among the spreadsheets and stale vending machine coffee. On our way back, Thomas suggested we stop at a café. At first, I declined, then thought, Why not? Im overdue a good slice of lemon drizzle anyway.

Well! No sooner had we sat down than Thomas struck up a charming conversation with the cafe waitressa sweet, pretty girl named Lucy, with a shy smile and kind eyes. There and then, I knew: she was it.

Lucy was polite, soft-spoken, and refreshingly down to earth. I decided to have a private word and told her the whole story, honest as you like.
Are you quite mad? she asked, blinking in disbelief. Isnt this a bit improper?
Well, I replied, you want a better life, dont you? My Thomas can give it to you.

I came right out and offered her a substantial sumenough to pay off her brothers tuition at university and then some. Sibling love triumphed over her initial reluctance, and she agreed to woo Thomas (with all the conviction of a romantic lead in an ITV drama).

With our secret pact sealed, Lucy and I kept in regular contact. I gave her all the tips and inside info she needed to properly win Thomas over. (Honestly, it was like training a contestant for The Great British Bake Off, minus the soufflé.)

Results came quicker than Id dared hope. Thomas fell head over heels, hardly talking about anything but Lucy. He waxed lyrical about how beautiful she was, her marvellous Sunday roasts, her taste in music, her favourite films the works! Eventually, I asked if I might meet his new girlfriend. Bless him, he couldnt wait.

When Lucy came round for tea, I sat her down for a calm chat. She admitted shed genuinely fallen for Thomas, then tried to return the money, but that wasnt my plan at all.

After all, if love has blossomed, why should I pinch back a few thousand pounds? I told her to keep the money and start making wedding plans.

Now, Thomas and Lucy are the picture of bliss, I have a wonderfully obedient daughter-in-law who doubles as my new best mate, and the little arrangement between us is our secret for keeps. Im quite chuffed my plan turned out so wellafter all, isnt it every mothers duty to ensure her sons happinessand maybe her own too?
