I Thought My Marriage Was Thriving Until My Friend Asked Me a Question

Published

on

I thought my marriage was going smoothly until a friend asked me a blunt question.

I wed very young, falling headoverheels for James. We dated for four years before we finally said I do, and weve weathered a lot together.

For more than six years weve shared a home in Manchester. I trust James completely, and I trust myself. Hes sweet, attentive, and always pitches in with the housework. He isnt the strongest or the most daring man, and hes not exactly a heartbreaker, but his spirit is warm and his optimism seems endless, giving me the strength to get through lifes hardest moments.

The problem is that James is indecisive and never steps out of his comfort zone. Hes shy, and after six years of being together little has changed. He doesnt look after his own health and any hint of change makes him nervous. Hes about ten years older than me; Im twentysix, love my life, have a great job, bought my own car, and were still paying off the mortgage on our house.

Just the other day Sophie asked, What are you even doing with him?

That question cracked the bubble of my personal happiness, and now I sit here wondering, What am I really doing with him?

Ive realized that a partnership should lift both people up, not leave one feeling stuck. True contentment comes from growing together, not from staying in a relationship that holds you back.
