I Took My Wedding Suit Out of the Wardrobe and Suddenly an Envelope Fell to the Floor.
I was pulling my wedding suit out of the wardrobe when, out of nowhere, an envelope slipped onto the floor.
I didnt manage a wink of sleep that night. A tiny slipup could have turned my whole life upside down, so I was a nervous wreck.
Tomorrow Im marrying my girl, Gwendolyn. I think shes perfect for me, and Im sure every bloke gets a bit jittery before the big day. I kept wonderingwhat if Im making the wrong choice? What if, down the line, the marriage falls apart? Will Gwendolyn and I be able to stay faithful to each other for the rest of our lives? Can we keep respecting and loving each other forever?
Before I knew it, the thoughts were swirling and dawn was already breaking. I got out of bed, splashed water on my face and downed a coffee.
Theres still a lot to do today. Soon my friends and family will be trickling into the house. My best mate, David, is coming over. Hes been married for ages and will have the right words to soothe me before such an important event. Hopefully he can calm my nerves.
I fetched the suit again and, just like before, the envelope hit the floor. Nothing was written on the front, which left me even more baffled.
Inside was a letter. Who could have sent it and why?
I set the suit aside, plonked down on the bed and started reading. The handwriting looked familiar. At the top it said, Read this before you tie the knot.
It was from my mum. I wondered why shed write this nowwas there something in there that might stop me from getting married?
I started to panic, but I forced myself to keep going. The letter read:
My son, youre about to get married. Im thrilled youve found such a wonderful bride.
Remember, marriage isnt just about fun and romance. Its a massive responsibility. Youll hit bumps and setbacks on the road, but if you and Gwendolyn truly love each other, youll get through them together.
Getting married means youre ready to walk the whole journey with your partner. Never forget youre the head of the household now. In many ways, your familys future will rest on you.
Dont argue with your wife over money. Money cant replace each other, and squabbles about how she spends hers only dig a deeper hole.
Know that your wife is the best person for you and shell need your support. If she feels that, shell be able to move mountains for you.
Mutual respect and understanding are the cornerstones of any family. When youre angry, its better to be alone for a bitotherwise you might say things youll regret and make fixing the problem a nightmare.
Never give her a reason to be jealous. If she starts doubting you, that feeling can linger for ages.
There are plenty of women out there, but dont forgetyours is the one you love most.
I want Gwendolyn to think the same way.
Love your wife, think of us and remember your fathers advice. Well always be with you.
Mum.
