Finally, the big day arrived, and George rushed her to the maternity ward. When their healthy baby girl was born, he breathed a huge sigh of relief. Overjoyed, the new dad headed home to catch some rest. The next day, he went back to visit Emily and their daughteronly to be told, “Your wife isnt here.”
“What? Thats impossible!” George refused to believe it. “Maybe she just stepped out? Can you look for her?”
The nurse shook her head. “No, shes gone. Left this note.” She handed him a folded piece of paper. George unfolded itand went pale.
Turns out, George, the sales manager, had fallen hard for Emily the moment she joined his team. She was young, pretty, and on her first day, he couldnt help but introduce himself with a warm smile.
“Morning, colleague,” he said, and she smiled back sweetly.
“Morning.”
“Overseeing your training will be Sarahshes the senior here. Good luck, hope we work well together.”
The other women in the office exchanged glances. Once George left, Sarah whispered to Claire, “Since when does George personally welcome new hires?” They both giggled.
Emily kept to herself at first, observing. Just twenty-two, shed already wrecked a few marriageseven had an affair with a much older college professor before his wife caught wind of it.
Weeks later, George asked her out for coffee after work.
“Why not?” she teased. “Youre my bossgood to stay on your good side.”
Her smile seemed so genuine, he almost thought she was joking. But she agreed, and Georgenever married, no kids, just a few flingsfell fast. Soon, they were dating, and the whole office was stunned when he announced their wedding.
George spoiled Emily rotten, never questioning her demands. Shed made one condition clear: “No kids yet. Im not ready.” He assumed shed change her mind, but every time he brought it up, she shut him down.
Then one day, he found her crying in the bathroom, a positive pregnancy test in her hand.
“Emily youre pregnant?!”
She nodded, tears streaming. “I dont want this. I dont want to get fat. Fix it.”
But George swept her up, kissing her wet cheeks. “Dont cry, lovethis is happiness! Were having a baby!”
Emily was determined to end it. She booked an appointment, but George stormed into the clinic just in time. He dragged her out, pleading, “Please, keep our baby. Ill do everythingI promise!”
Reluctantly, she agreedon one condition: no diapers, no midnight feedings. George agreed. The whole pregnancy, he waited on her hand and foot. When the time came, he rushed her to the hospital. The moment their healthy daughter arrived, he finally relaxed.
Exhausted but elated, he went home to rest. The next day, he returnedonly to be told, “Your wifes gone. Left the baby.”
“No way! She must be around somewherelook for her!”
The nurse handed him a note. George unfolded it, his face draining of color. Three words: “Dont look for me.”
Emily vanishedno calls, no trace. A month and a half later, she finally phoned. “Pack my things. My ex, Tom, will pick them up. File for divorce yourselfI wont show.”
Not a word about their daughter. So George became both mother and father to little Alice, with his mum helping out.
Fast-forwardAlice is now in primary school. One day, George gets a call from her teacher. “Your daughters been in a fight.”
He rushes over to find Alice and a boy, Daniel, outside the headteachers office. Daniels got a scratch on his cheek; Alice glares at him.
“Dad, he pushed me!”
“Not true!” Daniel insists. “She called me a fatherless nobody and stuck her tongue out!”
The teacher sighs. “Parents, sort this out.”
George and Daniels mum, Sophie, exchange glancesand burst out laughing.
“Im George, Alices dad.”
“Sophie, Daniels mum.”
The kids sheepishly apologize, and George suggests pizza to smooth things over.
Turns out, Daniels dad had denied him his whole life, despite Sophies proof. Shed left, rebuilt their livesonly for this school scrap to bring them all together.
George and Sophie hit it off. Soon, theyre dating, the kids are thrilled, and life moves on.
A year later, Sophies pregnant again. Alice and Daniel excitedly pick a name for their baby brother: Oliver.
